ECHO

2018 de Lynch Bages Pauillac Château Lynch Bages

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Pauillac
ABV 13%

62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. The 2018 Echo has an enticing nose of ripe blackcurrent and green pepper. The palate has quite a four-square framework of serious chalky tannin. There's plenty of concentrated fruit but for now it's a touch hidden behind the structure. We're confident this will knit together but you will have to wait five years or more as this is a second wine built in the image of the grand vin. Drinking range: 2027 - 2040 L&S (Apr 2019)

Even in a vintage as generous as 2018, the main Pauillacs are a long way away from being ready, so if you are wanting to look at this appellation now, think about the 2nd wines. You get plenty of graphite and cigar box, set against blackberry fruits, crushed mint leaf and pomegranate. Tannins are making their presence felt, but then doesn't that just remind us that we're in Pauillac? No new oak. Drinking range: 2023 - 2034 Rating: 93 Jane Anson, Decanter (Oct 2021)

The 2018 Echo de Lynch Bages is an attractive, fruity wine to drink now and over the next decade or so. Sweet red berries, blood orange, mint, spice and pomegranate are nicely pushed forward in this attractive, lithe Pauillac. A few hours of air does wonders here. Drinking range: 2022 - 2033 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Echo de Lynch Bages is matured for 12 months in one-year-old oak, as usual. I find this much more restrained and better defined on the nose compared directly with the Verso de Haut-Batailley, offering pure blackberry and cassis fruit laced with minerals and pressed violets. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, layers of slightly toasty black fruit laced with tobacco and black pepper, and a fine, cohesive finish. A little denser in style for Echo, but well-crafted, and it should give 12 to 15 years of drinking pleasure. Drinking range: 2023 - 2040 Rating: 88-90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2019)

Château Lynch Bages

Pauillac Cinquième cru 1855 Thomas Lynch emigrated to Bordeaux from Galway in Ireland in 1691. He had two children and it was his son Thomas who associated the family name with Bordeaux by inheriting Lynch-Bages through his wife, and buying Lynch-Moussas and Dauzac in Margaux. Jean-Charles Cazes, who had recently bought Château Les Ormes de Pez in St Estèphe, took the tenancy of Lynch-Bages in 1934, and bought the property outright five years later. It has been the ownership of the Cazes family, who still own the estate, which turned Château Lynch Bages into the leading estate it is today, far exceeding the seemingly lowly 5th growth status bestowed upon it in 1855. There are 90ha of vines in the small village of Bages, just south of Pauillac. Red grapes are planted to 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Wines are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel before ageing in wood (60% new) for 15 months. There has been a second wine produced at Lynch-Bages since 1978 that was originally called Château Haut Bages Averous, but has recently been renamed Echo de Lynch Bages. A small amount of Château Lynch Bages Blanc is made from 40% each of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and 20% Muscadelle.
