Deep and richly fruited. there's cinnamon and sweet tobacco balanced by delicious cherry fruit and plum. Yet again it is the drive and line that he conjures up in these Lodi gems that are so impressive. This is a beautiful heady wine - but for people who don't necessarily want big wines. Neatly done and this comes from the super vineyard Layne works so meticulously. L&S (Mar 2023)

m2 Wines
Layne Montgomery is a charming, colourful character and a very talented winemaker. Self-taught he started this fantastic project in 2004, creating dynamic, artisanal wines from distinctive vineyards on the West side of Lodi, California.
Some vines are now over 100 years old, which is remarkable for this often forgotten part of the wine world. He eschews French oak for American oak. 'French oak is too delicate, he says. 'It's like putting lipstick on John Wayne'.
The wines have simply got better and better as Layne has honed his craft and he is now making stand out wines for the region. When we met him on a balmy August night amongst the vines of Lodi we were immediately enchanted by his stunning wines and amusing, outspoken character. These are wines with personality and a refined sense of place.

California is an exciting melting-pot to explore. Our quartet of talented winemakers in California, all came to winemaking here later in life – drawn to the opportunity that the state offered to fulfil their vinous dreams.
Between them they are producing wines that paints a picture of the great diversity that California has to offer – from bold Zinfandel, through fine-boned Grenache, aromatic Syrah and a Chardonnay imbued with some Californian sunshine.
We’ve put together a mixed six along these lines as well – a snapshot of what the Golden State can do – across a variety of terroir, grape varieties.
