(Cask Sample) This is from gravelly soil. On the nose there is real focus to the firm and dark fruit. In the mouth you can really get a sense of the stony soil here. Poised and almost lean black cherry leads the fruit profile, with hard plum flesh. There's a whiff of fresh-cut green herbs too and some smokiness. Quite serious and direct, clean as a whistle. Bio-dynamically farmed. L&S (Nov 2020)

(from a .80 ha parcel in the climat of Sur les Grèves). A slightly more complex if less elegant nose presents notes of both various red berries and plenty of floral elements. The delicious, generous and mouthcoating medium-bodied flavors possess focused power on the compact, firmly structured and mildly austere finale. I very much like the texture which should permit this to be enjoyed on the younger side though be aware that there is sufficient underlying material to repay 12 to 15 years of cellaring. Drinking range: 2031 - Rating: 92 Allen Meadows, (Apr 2021)

Aromas of cassis, plums, orange rind and sweet spices introduce Drouhin's 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves, a medium to full-bodied, bright and lively wine that's perfumed and precise, framed by powdery tannins and lively acids. It's more elegant and refined than its 2018 counterpart. Rating: 90 - 92+ William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of dark berry fruit, light seaweed and oyster shell scents, and the 30% whole cluster lends a subtle tertiary aspect. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, slightly chalky tannins. This is very well structured, delivering palpable energy. A saline finish gets the saliva flowing. Just a delicious Beaune Grèves. Drinking range: 2024 - 2040 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, (Dec 2020)

Domaine Joseph Drouhin

Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and still family owned, are one of the most well-respected names in Burgundy, especially through their flagship wine, the iconic Clos des Mouches.

A huge part of the Drouhin production comes from their own domaine fruit (78 hectares), and much of the rest comes from contracts such as that with the Marquis de Laguiche, who shook hands with the grandfather of the current generation, agreeing to let him manage his vineyards which included an important part of Le Montrachet; this collaboration endures. Today, the fourth generation is at the helm

Small refinements continue to be made here. The presses have been changed - a reversion to basket pressing for the reds, and for whites the presses are open - along with a number of other growers they are following the trend to think that slight oxidation of the juice before fermentation is not a problem and may add complexity as well as avoiding later problems of premature oxidation in bottle.

For the reds there has been the introduction of selective whole-bunch fermentation in the Côte de Nuits wines. The house style remains one that 'emphasises the natural elegance of great Burgundies' as they describe it. The domaine is all cultivated with an organic and biodynamic approach.
