CHÂTEAU COUTET

2019 1er Cru Classé Barsac

Colour White
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Barsac
Classification 1er Cru Classé
ABV 13%

The 2019 Coutet has quite a flamboyant, Germanic bouquet with petrol-infused botrytized fruit, though it lacks a bit of complexity and nuance. The palate is well-balanced with orange zest, marmalade and quince on the entry. Moderate depth, and quite linear towards the finish. It doesn't quite deliver the panache of the best wines of 2019 and there has been better Coutet's in recent years, but there is potential here. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drinking range: 2025 - 2048 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Coutet is an attractive Barsac. Orange marmalade, burnt sugar and spice infuse the 2019 with notable depth to fill out its ample, richly textured frame. There's plenty of character, but I don't find this especially finessed. Drinking range: 2024 - 2039 Rating: 90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Coutet has a very intense bouquet of wild honey, saffron, dried pineapple chunks and a touch of cold, wet stones, all imbued with palpable joie-de-vivre. The taut, fresh palate is underpinned by a silver bead of acidity (always one of this Barsac's leitmotifs), offering clementine, peach and nectarine toward the persistent finish. A joy. Drinking range: 2024 - 2055 Rating: 95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

Golden yellow in colour, concentrated and enticing. The focus is on texture and architecture rather than flavour on the first beats, but it opens to show enjoyable quince, lime, white flowers. Rich through the mid palate with welcome slate scrape and mandarin zest bitterness on the finish. Drinking range: 2022 - 2042 Rating: 95 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jan 2022)

Château Coutet

Barsac Premier Cru 1855 A square tower indicates the origins of Château Coutet as a 13th Century fortification. Indeed the château is a mixture of various styles added at various times in its long history. At the turn of the 19th Century, Château Coutet came into the possession of the Lur-Saluces family, owners of Château d'Yquem, and they owned it until 1923. Since 1977, Coutet has been owned by the Baly family, represented today by brothers Dominique and Philippe. Château Coutet is one of the two Premier Cru properties in Barsac (the other being Château Climens). There are 38.5ha of vineyard, given over 75% Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Wines are fermented in wood (50% new) and aged for up to 18 months.
