The 2019 Couvent des Jacobins has quite a high-toned bouquet, floral, black cherries, sloes and blueberry, very perfumed and outgoing in style. The palate is fleshy and quite extracted, but a green note nags away on the finish. This is rather vexing, given a very promising showing after bottling. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Rating: 0 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Couvent des Jacobins races across the palate with layers of inky dark fruit, chocolate, licorice and sweet dark spice. Opulent and dense to the core, Couvent des Jacobins is one of the more exuberant wines readers will find in Saint-Émilion. All the elements are beautifully balanced from start to finish. Drinking range: 2026 - 2039 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Couvent des Jacobins showed well from barrel. Now in bottle, it has an expressive, well-defined nose of vivacious red fruit laced with rose petal and sous-bois, gently unfolding with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and pliant, quite focused, and perhaps just a little less peppery than out of barrel, with a hint of herbaceousness popping on the fresh finish. Very fine. One for those who appreciate "classic" Saint-Émilion. Drinking range: 2024 - 2044 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

Rich plum colour, controlled black pepper spice on the attack, with olive puree coming up alongside the blackberry and blueberry fruits. Enjoyable wine with control and poise. 3.76pH, 15% new oak. Organic certified. Thomas Duclos consultant. A wine that often really settles into itself over ageing, and you see that here. Drinking range: 2025 - 2042 Rating: 93 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jan 2022)
