The 2019 has a beguiling bouquet with red berry fruit, truffle and light Provençal herb scents that are beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. This is exquisite in terms of balance, silky smooth, building gradually with a harmonious and quite effortless finish. Divine - this is a stellar showing. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drinking range: 2025 - 2055 Rating: 97 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Gazin is super-impressive in this tasting. So balanced and elegant, the 2019 is aromatic, light on its feet and wonderfully nuanced. Crushed flowers, mint, sweet red cherry, mocha and tobacco are all beautifully lifted in the glass. Drinking range: 2026 - 2044 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Gazin has a convincing, perfumed nose of beautifully defined red fruit, light estuarine aromas, touches of crushed stone and even a hint of fig. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit. There is very good depth and substance here, and veins of dark chocolate and allspice toward the finish. The only minor quibble is that it needs a little more finesse. But it is a superb Gazin and a great Pomerol. Drinking range: 2025 - 2055 Rating: 95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

A serious, deliciously Left Bank feel to this Gazin, with brooding cassis fruits, muscular tannins running through with the sappy salinity that I am finding in many of the great Pomerols in 2019. Layered smoked earth and tobacco leaf, together with a creamier feel to the fruits, become clearer as this opens, and this is built for long life. A yield of 44hl/ha. Drinking range: 2027 - 2042 Rating: 93 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jan 2022)

Château Gazin

It is said that Château Gazin occupies the site of an old Knights of St John hospital that tended to pilgrims on their journey to Santiago de Compostella - a legend that is reflected in the cross on the label and in the name of the second wine, l'Hospitalet de Gazin. During the 19th Century, Gazin was one of the most highly regarded estates in Pomerol. The Bailliencourt family came into the estate by marriage in the early years of the 20th Century but, sadly, their tenure has mostly been of a château in decline. However, the estate's inheritance by the dynamic Nicolas de Bailliencourt in the 1980's has completely turned Gazin around and, once again, it is one of the châteaux to watch. The machine harvesters, bought as recently as 1979, were disposed of, a new chais was built, the second wine was introduced to allow stricter selection for the grand vin, and the services of Pomerol guru Jean-Pierre Moueix were engaged. The wine is typically 90% Merlot and spends 18 months in barrique, of which 50% are new wood.
