2019 Les Sables de la Crau Domaine Jean Royer

Colour Red
Origin France, Rhône
District Southern Rhône
Village Châteauneuf du Pape
ABV 16.5%

A warm and inviting style, with a wave of cassis and cherry puree flavors infused with hints of red tea and flecks of garrigue and singed cedar. Stays sleek and focused through the finish, thanks to very refined minerality. Rating: 94 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Nov 2021)

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Sables De La Crau (100% Grenache) brings the elegance and finesse up to another level and offers a beautiful perfume of black raspberry, strawberry, and blueberry fruits as well as notes of wildflowers, violets, lavender, and camphor. Full-bodied, incredibly seamless, and ultra-fine, this is Grenache at its more elegant and graceful, with flawless balance and a great finish. Hats off to Jean-Royer. This is the finest wine I've tasted from this estate. Rating: 97 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Nov 2021)

The tiny production 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Sables De La Crau checks in 100% Grenache from a sandy parcel in the famed La Crau lieu-dit. It was partially destemmed and brought up all in demi-muids. Incredible notes of black raspberries, mulled strawberries, cassis, orange peel, and flowery incense all soar from the glass and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, silky, polished tannins, and a gorgeous finish. This opulent, complex, seamless 2019 does everything right. It’s going to offer incredible pleasure right out of the gate yet also evolve for 10-15 years. Drinking range: 2020 - 2035 Rating: 95-97 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Jun 2020)

Domaine Jean Royer

Jean-Marie Royer inherited his vines in 1985 and set about improving the grape varietal mix and the vinification from then. Since more than half of the domaine is in unclassified ('Vin de Table') or 'Côtes du Rhône, he has developed a marque 'Le Petit Roy' sold as Vin de Table' for everything that does not make it into the Châteauneuf cuvées. The Petit Roy has always been a big hit in the shops ever since first joining our list.

His Châteauneufs are just gorgeous and offer refreshingly fantastic value for money. He has undoubtedly been much helped his close friend, the late star oenologist Philippe Cambié, who he went to school with and also played rugby with for many years. Cambié was more famous for a full-on rather extracted style, but Jean-Marie imposed his own, fresher, brighter style on all his wines which are crunchy and well-defined, helping cement these elegant expressions of Grenache as some of the finest from Châteauneuf.
