MARQUIS DE CALON

2019 Saint Estèphe Château Calon Ségur

Grapes Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe
ABV 13%

The 2019 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur does not quite possess the complexity of the 2019 Capbern on the nose, more red fruit here, earthier in style. The palate is medium-bodied with graphite infused black fruit, moderate depth, a touch of abrasiveness towards the finish that should be abraded with time. There is something uncompromising here...but I like that. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drinking range: 2026 - 2046 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a terrific second wine. Ample, bold and dramatic, the 2019 packs a huge punch. Black cherry, plum, new leather, graphite and incense build as this flamboyant, opulent Saint-Estèphe shows off its considerable allure. The 2019 is a big wine, but the 15.1% alcohol is not especially evident. Drinking range: 2025 - 2039 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Le Marquis de Calon, matured in 25% new oak, sports an almost identical bouquet to the one I found out of barrel, featuring intense blackberry, iodine and pressed iris petals, albeit with more composure. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth, slightly lactic entry and fine acidity, maybe not quite as "crunchy" as I recall, yet still satisfyingly persistent. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

A solid second wine, with depth through the mid palate, bright and perky damson fruits with a sense of power and momentum. A return to a more classic and juicy expression of this wine than in 2018, although a little dry on the finish. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 91 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jan 2022)

Château Calon Ségur

St Estèphe Troisième cru 1855 Château Calon Ségur is the northernmost Grand Cru estate classified in 1855, sitting just north of the village of St Estèphe. It was once part, as the name suggests, of the vast holdings of the Ségur family, owners amongst others of Lafite and Latour. In the 18th Century, Nicolas-Alexandre Ségur is said to have remarked "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is in Calon", and the label bears his heart to this day. In the early years of the 19th Century, the then owner Etienne Dumoulin became interested in an underdeveloped part of the estate, which was cleared and planted with vines. Such was the quality that the rump of Calon-Ségur was sold off, and Etienne's new estate went on to become Château Montrose. Calon-Ségur came into the hands of the Gasqueton family in 1894, and it is still owned by the family. A solid performer, especially recently, the Grand Vin is made with a relatively high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (as high as 90% in some vintages). The vineyards are 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and the wines spend 18 months in wood. The second wine is Marquis de Calon.
