BOURGOGNE ROUGE

2020 Les Grands Chaillots Thibault Liger-Belair Successeurs

Grapes Pinot Noir
Colour Red
Origin France, Burgundy
District Côte d'Or
Sub-district Côte de Nuits
Village Bourgogne Rouge
ABV 13.5%

Thibault has added another whole hectare of vines to sources of this cuvée, this time it's Côte de Nuits Villages which has been declassified. It's now 4.5ha in total. A lovely cuvée, 20% whole bunch, a very light vinification with just two pigeages - although the seeds were woody he was afraid to extract woody tannins as the alcohols are quite high. Dense and rich while remaining fresh and sappy with excellent colour and texture as well as well-formed Pinot expression. L&S (Nov 2021)

Earthy and sauvage-suffused aromas include those of dark currant and soft wood nuances. The racy, bright, sleek and nicely precise flavors also conclude in a mildly rustic but delicious and lingering finale. This is really quite pretty and a wine that should drink well young. Drinking range: 2023 - Rating: 86-89 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

The degrees have stayed sensible at 12.8%, as the vines, half from below Chambolle, half from Arcenant, never had hydric stress. Jet purple, lively ripe bouquet, sun dried raspberry, plenty of structure here, in both tannin and acidity. Concentrated all the way round. Tasted: November 2021 Rating: 87-88 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

A mix of fruit from Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, now with Hautes-Côtes fruit to impart freshness, the 2020 Bourgogne Grand Chaillots has a slightly earthy, ash-tinged bouquet that takes time to unfold. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red fruit, touch of marmalade and quince with a fresh but not long finish. Fine. Drinking range: 2023 - 2027 Rating: 87-89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2021)

Thibault Liger-Belair Successeurs

The lack of the word 'domaine' in the name signals that this is a négociant wine from Thibault Liger-Belair. On the whole Thibault buys grapes having tended the vines with his own team, so that the wines are domaine wines in all but name.
