This has aromas of mulberries, blackberries, hazelnuts and violets. Full-bodied, with firm and compact tannins. Plenty of weight and depth. I like the blue fruit and floral character. 65% merlot, 20% cabernet franc, 10% cabernet sauvignon and 5% malbec. Drink from 2026. Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2023)

The 2020 Moulin Haut-Laroque has come together beautifully. It offers up an exciting mix of super-ripe dark cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice and spice, all in a racy, unctuous style that offers tons of immediacy. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Moulin Haut-Laroque did not really rock my world in barrel. Now in bottle, it has improved on the nose, gaining more clarity with simple brambly black fruit and just an undercurrent of greenness. The palate is medium-bodied with coarse tannins, touches of black olive infusing the black fruit but it feels short on the finish. Drinking range: 2023 - 2025 Rating: 85 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Moulin Haut-Laroque is so promising. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha all meld together in this unctuous, undeniably sexy Fronsac. In a decidedly flamboyant style, with all the elements harmoniously balanced. Tasted two times. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 90-92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jun 2021)

Château Moulin Haut Laroque

The Château Moulin Haut Laroque vineyard has been producing wine since 1890. There are just over 16 hectares in production, on the plateaus and hillsides of Fronsac. It is planted between 5500 and 6700 vines per hectare, with 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% (100 year old) Malbec, with lots of old vines - and an average vine age of 55 years old. Jean-Noël Hervé has handed over to his son Thomas a vineyard at the top of its appellation, which, as Robert Parker has written 'seems never to disappoint'. The harvest is manual, picked into small crates for transport to the modern winery, with dual sorting tables and total de-stemming. The winery uses gravity - the only pumps ever used are peristaltic. The wine is aged for 18 months in barrel, with 35% new wood. The wine has a distinctive character of limestone soils, with a bracing structure and firm definition framing a fruit which concentrated and expressive. A tannic frame is part of what makes this wine such a joy to drink, especially with quite hearty food.
