DAMASCENE

2020 Semillon Stellenbosch

Grapes Sémillon
Colour White
Origin South Africa
Village Stellenbosch
ABV 13.5%

The 2020 Semillon comes from vines on alluvial decomposed sandstone. It has quite an intense bouquet, very pure with lemon verbena, honeysuckle and light beeswax aromas. This is very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with a pithy entry, great depth, slightly lower in acidity than I expected yet still balanced. Very expressive towards the finish with hints of lime and orange pith towards the finish. This is a lovely Semillon packed full of flavour. Drinking range: 2023 - 2033 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2022)

From historic bush vines planted in 1942 and 1962. Shaped by the decades, these vines produce concentrated Sémillon pearls, interspersed with the mysterious, old vine oddity, the mutated Sémillon Gris. Picture rolling dunes of golden sand, the amber glow of twilight; this wine lives in the mind as much as it does sensorially. It’s ethereal at first, opening with the scent of orange blossoms, then sea breeze and salty peach, moving to deeper tones of dried mango and dulce de leche. The palate is dry, textured, and chalky. As complex as origami, the wine folds and layers within itself, while revealing the purity of white peach on the mid-palate, followed by grapefruit, green pistachio and ginger biscuits. Stony and focused on a long, mineral finish. If you can, drink this wine over three days to see how it evolves.Winemaker's notes (Feb 2022)

Damascene

Damascene is a seriously exciting new find for us in South Africa. Their maiden vintage here was 2018 and we were blown away by the results. 2019, their second vintage was sold out on release, read the press release HERE.

The highly acclaimed Jean Smit, previously winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof, has teamed up with David Curl, former owner of Bordeaux’s Chateau Gaby.

Their goal is to explore all across the South African winelands in search of exceptional sites. Sites that deliver an important moment of insight, and hence the name of the project. A Damascene moment of clarity, where we can all understand the greatness of these small, prized plots.

The vineyards are old and well established but small, so each of these brilliant wines is only released in very small quantities. We urge you to catch them while you can.

This wine isn't currently part of a mixed case, but you can always browse our full selection of mixed cases here.
