Rich nose again, here with more black fruit and it's a dryer darker style with the same supple weight or even a bit more. The blackness has that trace of sucrosity too. Completely harmonious and all of a piece. Lots more to come on this one which is very rich and powerful. 'A little Clos de la Roche' says Virgile. Drinking range: 2030 - 2045 L&S (Nov 2021)

(from 60+ year old vines). A cooler and more elegant nose combines notes of kirsch, dark currant, spice and a plethora of floral nuances. There is terrific intensity to the tautly muscular middle weight flavors that display evident power on the mineral-driven, super-sleek and impressively well-balanced, indeed harmonious finale. As is usually the case with this wine, it’s sufficiently compact when young to need at least some patience but it will need 12 to 15 years to reach its peak. Drinking range: 2032 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Faconnières 1er Cru has a taut and slightly flinty bouquet. This is well-defined and focused, touches of clove and sous-bois emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, good acidity with a touch more density on the finish compared to the Aux Charmes. Cellar this for 3-5 years - this is a strong follow-up to the superb '19. Drinking range: 2026 - 2048 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2021)

Domaine Lignier-Michelot

A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.

The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
