2020 Friuli Colli Orientali Azienda Agricola Visintini

Grapes Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Friuli Venezia Giulia
Sub-district Friuli Colli Orientali
ABV 14%

30% aged in wood, rest in inox. Oliviero tells us that Refosco is really not easy to grow, must be cautious about the maturity. Not all the bunch matures evenly and so you usually have to chop the bottom of the bunches off.. So this is a labour of love - and we are glad they have the patience for it as the results are super.
Always good with natural acidity Refosco has lots of natural colour - not such huge tannins. The Visintini's 2019 is delicious. A 'New World Pinot Noir like feel and texture - good and clean but nicely ripe red and black fruits. Nice straightening line of juicy zip too.

What a triumph this wine is. With masses of deep purple colour, a bright, fresh-picked berry nose, and a slippery, juicy, fun-soaked palate, this is a fabulous wine with so much joy and energy that it is incredible. But there is more. While the fruit is seemingly as bright and energetic as the most demonstrative of Beaujolais, another character in this wine engages the taste buds and kicks the brain into a different gear. The natural acidity in this wickedly delicious red wine is electric. A hint of oak here adds complexity, but the class and breeding come from the lightning strike of acidity on the finish. As a descriptor, mouth-watering doesn’t come close, and if you chill this wine down a few degrees, it further ratchets up the drama. I’m not sure how much fun you expect to have from a sub-twenty-quid bottle of red wine, but this wine is pure, bottled CGI entertainment!Matthew Jukes (Apr 2024)

Certified organic. Dark greyish crimson. Powdery, dusty impression over the leafy, peppery dark fruit. Aromatic in a savoury way. Fine, dry texture. So mouth-watering, lightly textured and long. GV (JH) 14% Drinking range: 2023 - 2027 Rating: 16.5 Julia Harding MW, (Apr 2023)

Azienda Agricola Visintini

Founded in 1973 by Andrea Visintini, this twenty-four hectare estate has vineyards in Collio, Collio Orientali and Grave del Friuli, and is now controlled by the new generation of Oliviero and his twin sisters Cinzia and Palmira. The wines are beautifully made, each with wonderful expression of both the grape and the 'terroir'. Vineyard practices are now entirely biodynamic, and certified this year. These wines are also extraordinarily good value in what is generally a highly priced region.

With the 2014 vintage the family have unveiled the brilliant new labels for each of the wines - with the beautiful botanical drawings of flavours or fruits that relate to the flavour profiles in each different varietal. The wines are great too - in a far from straightforward vintage - beautiful fruit definition and lovely bright minerality.
