Vineyard Aux Réas

Above the route nationale to the south of Premier Cru aux Réas. Higher up the slope the vineyards are actually in the commune of Nuits. A soil of small stones at the meeting point of the combes of Nuits and Vosne. Thibault never uses whole bunches here. The aromas need to find a little more focus in the élevage, but this does Vosne very well, with delicacy and freshness along with a playful mix of mineral and quite voluminous fruit, building in intensity nicely to the finish. Thibault has 0.55 hectare planted in 1956 that abut the Premier Cru Clos des Réas. Limestone predominates and in places there is effectively no topsoil. This tastes of warm cobbler fruits and ganache dusted with spice. The tannins are stylishly rounded, and there's a lightly dry ping of limestone lift on the finish. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 94 Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2022)

Liger-Belair noted that this had just finished its malo and was, not surprisingly, displaying a lactic character to the spicy black fruit aromas. The round, suave and very rich flavors possess a velvety texture while delivering excellent length on the seductive but tension-filled finale. Note that this is sufficiently firm to reward up to a decade of cellaring. Drinking range: 2028 - Rating: 89-91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

No whole bunch here, which is now normal, as not needed on the active limestone. Rich intense black purple. This is massive yet not over the top, plenty of energy, very dark raspberry fruit a little reductive but this is pretty impressive. Light salinity here. Promising. Tasted: November 2021 Rating: 91-94 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair

Thibault Liger-Belair has two hectares in Les Saint Georges, the vineyard which gives Nuits the rest of its name, and 60 ares out of a total of 4 hectares of the Grand Cru Richebourg, as well as a good holding in the Clos Vougeot and some well-placed village wines. The vineyards are a good start, but it is Thibault himself who has catapulted this domaine straight into the very top echelons of Côte de Nuits domaines from his first vintage (2002). Thibault was trained as an oenologist but first worked as a wine buyer. He has come to wine making with a wide experience of wine buying, and has had the advantage of having discussed wine-making for many years, with the benefit of his oenological background, with some of the best winemakers of the world. Viticulture is biodynamic (since 2005), yields low but not ludicrously low, everything is pragmatic, so that he should be doing just what is necessary and no more. He uses 40-50% new wood maximum. The wines are bright, pure, focused, aromatic and elegant without lacking anything in the way of stuffing.
