CHÂTEAU BEAUMONT

2021 Haut Médoc

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
ABV 13%

Always somewhat of a weather vane for a vintage Beaumont was the very first 2021 we tasted. A very pretty nose is loaded with a great crunch of cabernet cassis. Palate feels softer, pretty and quite energetic. Quite true and lighter weight than recent years, this wins for its brightness and clean zippy lines. Could this be the ultimate luncheon Claret? 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. L&S (May 2022)

65 Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 Merlot, 5 Petit Verdot | 35% new oak | 12.6% alc | 40 hl/ha. This is a nice wine that just about manages to retain balance and fruit direction. It is a little lighter than I would ideally like, but I imagine that this will not trouble drinkers who will no doubt attack it early in life and enjoy the freshness and purity. Rating: 16 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jun 2022)

The 2021 Beaumont is a deep, punchy Haut-Médoc. A blast of dried herbs, charred earth, spice, leather and tobacco hits the palate as this pleasantly rustic wine shows off its considerable personality. The 2021 could be quite good if it comes together with élevage. Drinking range: 2023 - 2031 Rating: 88-90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2022)

This is bright and cheerful, not delivering as smoothly as in the past few vintages but there is plenty to enjoy here. Everything in its place, well made with a touch of smoked almosts and grilled oak. 40hl/h yield. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 85 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2022)

Château Beaumont

With its origins in 1824, Château Beaumont is a Cru Bourgeois estate in the Haut-Médoc on the left bank of the Garonne. The property has been owned by Société Grands Millésimes de France since 1986, owners of Château Beychevelle, the fourth growth Saint-Julien.

The 114 hectare estate is planted 53 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot to a vine density of 6,666 vines per hectare with an average age of 20 years for the vines. The vineyard is farmed on environmentally friendly principles, having used Terra Vitis and integrated farming techniques since 2004.

The harvested fruit is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats with three weeks of maceration. Soils are well-drained, deep and gravelly. With an average annual production of 600,000 bottles, the wines are matured in oak barrels (one-third new) for between 12 and 14 months, depending on the vintage. Their wines are characterized by their supple, silky and feminine structure. The tannins are generally mellow and rarely aggressive. All this contributes to making reliable, well-balanced wines full of charm and finesse, offering great value.
