We had a fabulous tasting at Cheval Blanc this year. It's a big year for them in some ways - as they will bow out of the St Emilion classification system with their 2022 vintage - so this will be the last one labelled Grand Cru Classé 'A' and they are going out in style! 2021 also memorable as the first time they have used more Cabernet Franc than Merlot in the blend, with a whopping 52%. Opening with a joyous nose. Its all here and in check. Lovely weight and bounce. Just such sophisticated measure. Sleek, polished feel- but no bruiser, nice restraint too - not flashy just really charming. Wonderfully broad aromatic range. Red fruits, green herbs and lovely smart notes of elegant oak which builds to the finish. They expect a fairly long élevage, all in new oak - to help tame some of the more feisty structure and grip. This is a very successful St Emilion, whatever the vintage. L&S (Apr 2022)

Polished and inviting in feel, offering notes of dark cherry and plum puree infused with black tea, followed by persistent echoes of warm stone, violet and bay through the lengthy finish. Lacks the density of a classic, but displays a seamless feel that avoids the austerity of the vintage. Great effort. Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2040. —J.M. Drinking range: 2023 - 2040 Rating: 93 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Dec 2023)

52 Cabernet Franc, 43 Merlot, 5 Cabernet Sauvignon | 100% new oak | 13.2% alc. All of the young Cabernet Franc vines on the property made the grade for this Grand Vin, and it certainly feels like this wine is the epitome of an exemplary team effort. Arnaud de Laforcade explained that the younger vines had smaller root systems and didn’t “catch the water”. This makes perfect sense and explains why this is such an expressive and layered wine. The nose is nothing short of stunning, and this wine has reverted to the thrilling aromatics of past great vintages of this wine. Cabernet Franc-driven, chiselled, square-jawed and with matinee idol looks, there is no preening musculature or self-conscious glossiness. 2021 Cheval Blanc is made from a thousand intertwined flavour threads, and they are combined to create a wine imbued with modesty, calm, confidence, and uncommon composure. I asked Arnaud if he could explain why I always prefer this style of wine and mark down the warmer, more imposing and more crowd-pleasing vintages. He answered that I clearly like authentic Cheval Blanc and not just boldly structured red wine. This is another rare red wine in this vintage with hints of Immortelle (see my notes on Château Margaux and others). I explained my Immortelle theory to Arnaud. He recognised it immediately, putting it down to the aerial Atlantic influence coupled with the dune locations where this rare plant is found. I am convinced that this is one of the most impressive wines of 2021, and it is evidenced by the undeniable complexity and the unhurried yet all-pervasive way in which it delivers its sublime flavours. This is an incredible, live-giving Cheval Blanc, and it is both classic and also classical, and very few wines can tick both boxes in 2021. Rating: 19.5 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jun 2022)

This is so finely textured with very precise, tight tannins. Medium to full body. Lots of layers here with black and blue fruit, stones, tar, dark cocoa and spices. Dried herbs. Long and persistent. Stays focused all the way. So precise. 52% cabernet franc, 43% merlot and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Rating: 97-98 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2022)

Château Cheval Blanc

Château Cheval Blanc sits at the pinnacle of the St Emilion meritocracy, unarguably alongside Château Ausone and arguably alongside Château Angélus and Château Pavie, the two estates elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) status in 2012. But, whilst the other three are clustered around the village of St Emilion, Cheval Blanc is far to the north-west and possibly only a St Emilion by accident of human geography. This is not classic St Emilion limestone and clay territory, Château Cheval Blanc (and neighbouring Figeac) sits on the gravel band that benefits its northerly neighbours across the road and across the border in Pomerol, namely Château Conseillante and Château l’Evangile. Next door Château Figeac was once a mighty estate of some 200ha, but by the early 19th Century the extravagances of the Comtesse de Carle-Trajet had taken their toll and large portions of the estate had to be sold off. Jean-Jacques Ducasse bought a plot of Figeac in 1832, and then a little bit more; his son-in-law, Jean Laussac-Fourcaud bought some more; and by 1871 Château Cheval Blanc had been carved out of the Figeac estate. Initially the wine was still sold as Château Figeac but from 1852 the name Château Cheval Blanc was used. The Laussac-Fourcaud family, morphing into the Fourcaud-Laussac family, owned Cheval Blanc until 1998. With the first classification of St Emilion’s vineyards in 1954, Cheval Blanc and Château Ausone were given special status as Premier Grand Cru Classé (A). New owners in 1998 brought Pierre Lurton in to manage Château Cheval Blanc, something he does alongside managing Château Yquem. A new space-age looking winery was completed in 2011. The 39ha of vineyards are planted to 58% Cabernet Franc and 42% Merlot, with an average age of 40 years. They were augmented by a 1.4ha block added from Château Tour du Pin in 2012. Another block of vines from Tour du Pin appear to be destined for white wine production.
