59 Cabernet Sauvignon, 28 Merlot, 10 Cabernet Franc, 1.5 Petit Verdot, 1.5 Carmenère | 55% new oak | 13% alc | 3.73 pH | 57 IPT There is no break in the action when you taste this wine, and I felt I had to type at double-speed to get all of the information down because this is a first-class Clerc Milon. Super-attractive from start to finish, the nose, palate and finish are in perfect harmony, and there is generosity and gregariousness about this wine that puts a smile on your face. After the stunning fruit intensity and amazingly forward air, the tannins come in, and the finish is firm and commanding and unlike any Clerc Milon I can remember. The incremental changes made at this property over the last decade are staggering. Is this the most-improved label in the region? It seems that the vineyard, which has been invested in hugely over the last few years, is eternally grateful. In more challenging vintages, like 2021, it works even harder to repay the efforts made by the viticulture team. This is a new high for Clerc Milon with stunning proportions and exceptional class. Polished and well-structured red with a medium body and firm but creamy and broad tannins. Perfumed already, with sandalwood, blackberry and currant character. Crushed stones. Tea leaves, too. Firm and solid to the end. Very solid for the vintage. 59% cabernet sauvignon, 28% merlot, 10% cabernet franc, 1.5% carmenere and 1.5% petit verdot. Rating: 93-94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2022)

Sappy, concentrated, powerful, this is a wine that has a lot of power naturally and in a vintage like 2021 (and with higher Cabernet Franc and higher Carmanère than the past few years), it runs the risk of being austere. Certainly you feel a sterner character than over the past few years, but there is flexibility in the tannins, and well-worked blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. Will benefit from fattening up through the mid palate over ageing, because all the elements are here. 55% new oak. 57IPT. 3.73ph. Caroline Artaud technical director as of this vintage. Strong candidate for upscore in bottle. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2022)

The 2021 Clerc Milon is a success, bursting with aromas of blackberries, cassis and plums mingled with violets, tobacco leaf and nicely integrated new oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, it's deep, fleshy and complete, with a rich core of succulent fruit, beautifully polished tannins and a long, sapid finish, it's a compelling, characterful wine that transcends the vintage. Rating: 92-94 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (May 2022)

Château Clerc Milon

Pauillac Cinquième cru 1855 The tiny village of Milon is in the far north of the Pauillac commune and lends its name to Château Duhart-Milon. Château Clerc Milon is a kilometre away to the east, the other side of Château Lafite-Rothschild in the village of Mousset but, for some reason, also adopted the name of Milon. The Clerc comes from Jean-Baptiste Clerc who owned the château at the time of the 1855 classification when it was accorded 5th Growth status - a status that the Rothschilds (of Mouton, who bought the run-down estate in 1970) have striven hard to exceed. As far as neighbours go, they don't come more impressive than Clerc Milon's - the vineyards adjoin both those of Château Lafite-Rothschild and Château Mouton Rothschild. That's quite a lot to compete with! The vineyards are planted to around 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, a proportion that has slowly been reduced over the years in favour of Merlot (40%). There is just over 10% Cabernet Franc, a little Petit Verdot and, very unusually for Bordeaux these days, a small amount of Carmenere. The label shows an ornate pair of jewelled dancing clowns that are part of the art collection at Mouton Rothschild.
