This is a densely packed wine with sooty tannins, and some charry oak notes and these elements add traction to the mouth-watering black fruit. This is a few shades darker than many Saint-Émilions, and it is an indulgent wine with decent impact and finely judged balance. It will open up early in its life to provide exotic drinking, and with coffee and chocolate hints, presumably due to the oak regime, it will appeal to fans of more expressive red wines. This is very much focused on clarity of fruit, taut blueberry, richer raspberry puree, with waves of rose petals, saffran, iodine, smoked earth and bitter chocolate. Winemaker Pierre Seillan (who has just handed over to his son but is still very much a big presence) has been making wine at various locations since 1962, making this his 54th vintage, the 19th here at Lassegue. Harvest September 29 to October 14, 3.64ph. 70% new oak, no chaptilisaiton, no bleeding of the tanks for extra concentration.
