The 2021 Lynch-Bages, picked at 43hL/ha and matured 75% new oak for a planned 18 months, has an outstanding bouquet, beautifully-defined and sensual, a mixture of black and blueberry fruit, very fragrant. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, good body and density, quite precise with a tensile finish. This fans out nicely on the finish. A very classy Lynch Bages with echoes of Jean-Michel Cazes' classics from the late eighties. Drinking range: 2027 - 2055 Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2022)

Displays a nice mix of almost caressing black cherry and black currant paste flavors, with warm cast iron, sweet tobacco and chestnut notes, showing just a nip of the vintage's austerity. Rock solid for the vintage, this offers a lively, savory edge that adds cut and energy. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2040. —J.M. Drinking range: 2026 - 2040 Rating: 94 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Dec 2023)

67 Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 Merlot, 5 Petit Verdot 3 Cabernet Franc | 75% new oak for 18 months | 13.1% alc | 90 IPT This is an astonishing wine given it shows ostentatious, richly-layered Cabernet fruit, and yet it only registers 13.1% alcohol. It feels more like a 14.5%, such is the succulent texture and lusty depth of fruit. In addition, there is plushness balanced by invigorating spiciness, and the overall experience is indulgent and downright delicious. Somewhat of an anomaly in a vintage of rather tender and ethereal wines, it is to be congratulated on maintaining its identity despite Mother Nature’s challenges. Rating: 18.5 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jun 2022)

This is really cool to smell, with lead pencil shavings, iron filings and oyster shells. Blackcurrants, too. Full to medium body with layers of firm tannins, but a dusty and powdery texture, too. Lovely finish. 67% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 3% cabernet franc. Rating: 96-97 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2022)

Château Lynch Bages

Pauillac Cinquième cru 1855 Thomas Lynch emigrated to Bordeaux from Galway in Ireland in 1691. He had two children and it was his son Thomas who associated the family name with Bordeaux by inheriting Lynch-Bages through his wife, and buying Lynch-Moussas and Dauzac in Margaux. Jean-Charles Cazes, who had recently bought Château Les Ormes de Pez in St Estèphe, took the tenancy of Lynch-Bages in 1934, and bought the property outright five years later. It has been the ownership of the Cazes family, who still own the estate, which turned Château Lynch Bages into the leading estate it is today, far exceeding the seemingly lowly 5th growth status bestowed upon it in 1855. There are 90ha of vines in the small village of Bages, just south of Pauillac. Red grapes are planted to 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Wines are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel before ageing in wood (60% new) for 15 months. There has been a second wine produced at Lynch-Bages since 1978 that was originally called Château Haut Bages Averous, but has recently been renamed Echo de Lynch Bages. A small amount of Château Lynch Bages Blanc is made from 40% each of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and 20% Muscadelle.
