Tasted on day 1 in Bordeaux, with much anticipation after the success it was last year. Pleasingly this is again beautifully put together. Richly laden with ripe berries and plump, sweet flesh - the 2021 Mangot stays just on track with a firm frame too, tempering the full-blown mid-palate. An exuberant 2021, and still great value at this price level.
Clever élevage is the key to maintaining that impressive and attractive fruit bundle - with just 30% new oak being used, 40% in 1 and 2 year old barrels, 20% in amphora, 10% in stainless steel vats. 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. L&S (Apr 2022)

The 2021 Mangot is a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it sashays out with notes of black raspberries, redcurrant jelly, and rosehip tea plus hints of fallen leaves and truffles. Medium-bodied, the palate is soft and elegant with lovely freshness and an earthy finish. Drinking range: 2024 - 2033 Rating: 87-89 Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent (May 2022)
Sweet blackberry and blueberry puree, grilled almond and tar oak notes that are a little too intrusive alongside the fruit. They are going for full impact, and almost make it. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 88 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2022)
A supple St.-Emilion with blueberries, dark plums, cloves and some charcoal. Medium body with firm yet velvety tannins. Cool blue and dark fruit. Rating: 91-92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2022)
Château Mangot
A single block of 37 hectares of vines on limestone clay soils run by the Todeschini family. The vineyard is planted with 75% Merlot, although this is tending to give way to Cabernet Franc in new plantings. 5% Cabernet Sauvignon completes the mix. Farming is organic, and the estate was awarded the Robert Parker 'Green Emblem' in 2023.
Élevage is in a mix of barrels, foudres and amphorae.
