CHÂTEAU PIBRAN

2021 Cru Bourgeois Pauillac

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Pauillac
Classification Cru Bourgeois

63 Cabernet Sauvignon, 37 Merlot | 40% new oak for 18 months | 13.0% alc. | 3.66 pH | 62 IPT Dark, expressive and wild cherry-soaked with serious gloss and spice but none of the sweetness or power that one finds in warmer vintages, this is a fabulous Pibran, and it seems to have a little more bounce and freshness than we have seen in past vintages. Perhaps the 2/3 Cab 1/3 Merlot recipe suits this wine more than the usual half and half brew. Let’s see what happens going forwards! Rating: 17 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jun 2022)

A fine, spicy and polished Pauillac with a sleek and supple tannin frame. Pretty core of blue and purple fruit with some peppercorns and cloves. All in balance. 63% cabernet sauvignon and 37% merlot. Rating: 91-92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2022)

Packed with cassis bud and blackberry fruit with salinity on the signoff, enjoably sappy and easy to drink, although lower ripeness overall than the past few years. 60% new oak. A little more Cabernet in the blend than usual, because of the frost and mildew, Drinking range: 2023 - 2032 Rating: 90 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2022)

Containing an unusually elevated 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Pibran offers up aromas of dark berries, cherries, cigar wrapper and sweet soil tones. Medium-bodied, ample and lively, with powdery tannins, impressive concentration for the vintage and a penetrating finish, this is a terrific effort. Rating: 90-92 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (May 2022)

Château Pibran

Château Pibran, now under the guidance Christian Seely and the AXA-Millesimes team, produces with good complexity, weight and concentration. Its 9.5 hectares of vineyards stretch across a well-drained gravel bank and border those of Mouton-Rothschild, Lynch-Bages and Pontet Canet. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (5%). The wines are vinified at Pichon-Baron. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and the wine is matured for 12-15 months in barriques (50% new). Pibran is classified as a cru bourgeois but is now producing wines the equal of many of its more highly classified neighbours.
