Just sneaking into the list by virtue of the case discount, this is one of my favourite white wines in the entire L&S wine list. I have been drinking this wine long before L&S tracked it down, yet it has never been finer nor more expressive than it is today. Another stunner from Luigi. This pure Fiano is the best expression of this lively, textured variety we have found. Perfumed and fresh with peach and apricot, wild flowers, touch of lime. Palate is zesty with lime juice, peach flesh A satisfying Mineral line, crisp acidity - but generous fruit extract. Gently perfumed and very satisfying. This is now the fifth vintage that is certified Organic.L&S (Jun 2022)

The 2021 Kratos lifts from the glass with a dusty bouquet that blends dried apricots and yellow flowers with raw almonds. This soothes with its soft textures yet stimulates the senses through a core of saline minerality and brisk acids as tart green apple tones resonate. My favourite ‘grand aperitif/starters’ white of the year is this scintillating Fiano from the masterful Maffini. While this wine loads an incredible amount of flair and detail into its performance, there is an overriding sense of cleansing freshness and vitality here that means you can glug it before settling in for a massive feast or, indeed, allow it to strut its stuff with elite starters. The perfume is magical with faint stone fruit and Sicilian lemon tones, and the palate is sleek, pricked with ozone freshness and keen acidity. Luigi Maffini

Luigi Maffini's vineyards are on the coast of Campania, south of Naples, across the bay from Positano, and planted with the local grapes, Fiano for the whites and Aglianico for the reds. While the family's first vines were planted in the seventies, the real beginning of this winery dates from 1996.

Luigi and his wife Raffaella are both graduates of Naples university in agricultural sciences. Luigi specialised in viticulture and winemaking. Ten years elapsed between our first tasting of his wines and getting Luigi 'on board', but he has now been with L&S since 2009.

Raffaella and Luigi run the vineyards organically, and share the land with their two children and three dogs, as well as hares, foxes, hedgehogs, hawks and wild boar, with which they are happy to live in peace. There are now two vineyard sites, at Castellabate and Giungano, so some of the wines are DOC Cilento and some DOC Paestum.
