Part of me is wondering what Pichon Baron would taste like with a little more Merlot from Les Tourelles in its make-up. Here one encounters damsons (from Merlot) and violets (from Cabernet Franc), and these two components immeasurably lift the dark Cabernet Sauvignon notes. This is a great success for Les Tourelles, and it proves that, while Merlot had a tough time in many estates on the Left Bank, if it is used carefully and with conviction, it can result in superbly silky and refreshing wines. This was always going to be more challenging in the 2021 vintage because it is Merlot dominant, and they have done an excellent job on keeping the focus on soft berry fruits.
