CHÂTEAU LANGOA BARTON

2022 3ème Cru Classé Saint Julien

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Julien
Classification 3ème Cru Classé
ABV 14.2%

The first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, which more than doubled the number of vats, permitting sub-plot by sub-plot vinification, the brilliant 2022 Langoa Barton offers up aromas of dark berries, cassis, violets and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy palate endowed with terrific depth and tension. Polished and penetrating, it should match or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages, and it is sure to be one of the more intelligent purchases of the en primeur campaign. Rating: 93-95 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)

Another successful vintage for Langoa, with dense cherry pit, graphite, smoked earth and bilberry fruits. Glass-staining ruby colour, a little atypical for the estate with its gourmet edge that gives supple tannins and a rich mid-palate, with concentrated fruit and spices all balanced by great tannic architecture. This is an impressive St Julien from the Barton family, with a ton of ageing potential. 60% new oak. Drinking range: 2030 - 2038 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2023)

56.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 2.5% Cabernet Franc. 60% new oak. 14.2% alc. 30 hl/ha. Wow, this is a stunning Langoa with some of the most resonant, impactful and direct fruit in the commune. The balance is spot-on, and the immediacy is exhilarating because while Léoville-Barton is reserved, introverted and singularly focused, this wine is refreshing, silky, come-hither and downright delicious. There has been a remarkable run of Langoas recently, and this 2022 is the finest of the bunch; in fact, I would go further and say this is the most complete and distinguished Langoa Barton I have tasted En Primeur, and it will be sure to provide anyone lucky enough to own it with impeccable drinking. Rating: 18+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2023)

This estate usually produces elegantly seductive wines and this 2022 is true to form with its refined tannins and velvety texture. All is well wrapped by the fruit flavours. Rating: 93-95 La Revue du Vin de France (May 2023)

Château Langoa Barton

Hugh Barton acquired the estate of Château Pontet-Langlois (and re-named it Langoa-Barton) in 1821, a few years before he then bought a portion of the estate of the Marquis de Léoville Beauvais, which he renamed Léoville Barton. The Barton's ownership of Langoa is the longest ownership by one family of any estate in the Médoc. There was no château to the Loville portion, and the wines were, and still are, made at Langoa. The Bartons had already been a fixture of the Bordeaux wine trade for a hundred years at this stage - Thomas Barton left his native Ireland in 1722 and settled in Bordeaux, eventually buying Château le Boscq in St Estèphe in 1745. His grandson Hugh, who bought the two Barton estates, developed a wine merchant's business with Daniel Guestier (Barton & Guestier), and the Guestier family proved crucial in protecting the Barton's châteaux during both the French Revolution and World War II when the Bartons had to flee France. Langoa Barton's vineyard classed as a 'Troisieme Cru Classé' in 1855, is quite small for this part of the Médoc with only 17 hectares in production. Planted with mostly Cabernet and Merlot, at 9100 vines per hectare, like Léoville itself. Also like Léoville, it is a terroir of deep gravel over clay. The average vine age is around 35 years.
