FELTON ROAD

2022 Block 5 Pinot Noir

IN STOCK
Grapes Pinot Noir
Colour Red
Origin New Zealand, South Island
ABV 14%

The 2022 Pinot Noir Block 5 doesn't start out as impressive as usual. Compared to the 2021 vintage, it seems less intense and voluminous. Yet it proves to be an athletic, honed Pinot Noir with pure fruit and a real sense of purpose. A taut line of acidity pulses through its core, pushing it towards a firm, long finish. The vintage makes this more restrained. The 2022 has all the essence of the vines without the big shoulders this vineyard can provide. Perhaps not as impressive, but for those who like quieter styles, 2022 provides. Drinking range: 2025 - 2038 Rating: 95 Rebecca Gibb MW - Vinous.com (May 2024)

Looking very tight and embryonic at this stage. With time in the glass some bergamot and wild raspberry emerges, with some clove and cinnamon spice. The palate is intense, and there is a depth of fruit but the tannins, whilst polished, are quite muscular and layer over the fruit. Heaps of potential but needs much longer. Drinking range: 2028 - 2035 Rating: ***** 96 Jane Skilton MW, Inside Burgundy (Dec 2023)

There is an opulence and intensity here yet it remains fresh and vivid with orange peel and ripe strawberry aromas and flavors. Medium to full body with firm and racy tannins that give it tension and focus. Clear and naked in so many ways giving it a clarity that is appreciated. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Better in two or three years. Screw cap. No. 32 in JamesSuckling.com's Top 100 Wines of New Zealand 2023. Rating: 97 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Oct 2023)

Felton Road

Felton Road and Rippon are undoubtedly the two leading vineyards in Central Otago, both making Pinots that are finely textured with fresh fruit flavours, rather than the 'fruit bombs' that so many others produce. Felton Road has been totally organic and biodynamic across their three Bannockburn vineyards since 2005. They have been certified by Demeter since 2009. After that there are more differences than similarities.
While Rippon, at Wanaka is on schist, Felton Road in Banockburn is on clay and calcareous loess. It is also very much in the rain shadow of the Main Divide. Irrigation is used at Rippon to help establish young vines, but dry farming is possible once the vines get their roots down, while at Felton Road permanent irrigation is required for the entire vineyard.
