LA CROIX DE BEAUCAILLOU

2022 Saint Julien

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv, Petit Verdot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Julien

64% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot. 14% alc. 3.75 pH. 93 IPT. La Croix is a quantum leap up from Le Petit Ducru because there is seriously impressive oak tied to a silky palate. It is bursting with clean, supple, berry fruit notes, and a delightful saline tang brings a savoury edge to the plush fruit. There is no bitterness here, and it is not as massive or muscular as expected. Supple, elegant and beautifully perfumed, this is an enchanting wine made with couture ingredients, and the whole package makes it the finest La Croix to date. The blend here is 66% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot, the Merlot dominance reflecting the low Cabernet yields, with some declassified Merlot bumping up the figure. The aromatics are dominated by the scents of blackcurrant, vanilla cream and crushed strawberry. The palate is elegantly composed, even with so much Merlot in the blend, with sweet black fruits, laced with vanilla, chalk dust and freesia, set in a sinewy and lithe texture, with a wonderful concentration of dark fruit. Underneath there is a huge grain of structure and grip, which wraps up the end of the palate with a ripe tannic intent. This is a delicious style of La Croix, more lithe than usual, rather fluid and supple, but with all that firm grip. This should develop well. The alcohol is 14.06%. 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot. Cask sample. Restrained aromatically with just a touch of vanilla oak. Bright, fresh and smooth on the palate with a saline note on the finish. Bit of chew at the end. Potential but needs to settle. Quite a lot of new oak (80%) that needs to be absorbed. (JL) 14% Drinking range: 2030 - 2040 Rating: 16++ James Lawther MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2023)

A chewy and polished red with blackberry and blueberry character. Full to medium body. Fine and tensioned. Excellent finish. Salty. Blackcurrants at the end. 66% merlot, 32% cabernet sauvignon, and 2% petit verdot. Rating: 94-95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2023)

Château Ducru Beaucaillou

St Julien Deuxième cru 1855 When the Beychevelle estate was broken up in 1642, in order to pay off the debts of the deceased owner, it gave birth to three Châteaux - Beychevelle, Branaire-Ducru and Ducru-Beaucaillou. Château Ducru Beaucaillou was so named because of the quality lent to the wine by the large pebbles in the soil - the "good pebbles" being "beau caillou" (although it was originally "Maucaillou", "bad pebbles" not being much use for any other kind of agriculture). In 1795, the estate was purchased by Bertrand Ducru, and the name was complete. The early years on the 20th Century were not kind to Ducru-Beaucaillou, but salvation was on hand with its purchase by Francis Borie in 1941. Apart from some problems with TCA during the late 1980's, the tenure of the Borie family has been a time of continuing improvement at Ducru-Beaucaillou. Today, Francis' grandson Bruno Borie heads up the estate. The Borie family also own Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Château Haut Batailley. The 75ha of vineyard are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot have, apparently, left the blend. The Grand Vin spends 18 to 20 months in wood, with the proportion of new wood varying between vintages. A second wine was introduced in 1995 - La Croix de Beaucaillou. Also produced at Ducru-Beaucaillou is Château Lalande-Borie from vineyard purchased from Château Lagrange in 1970 which, although it could perfectly legally be absorbed into Château Ducru Beaucaillou, has always been produced as a seperate wine.
