Tremblay is the original Lieu-dit at the heart of Moulin a Vent, where the Janins have owned vines since the 1930s. 'This is the true identity of the village' says Eric. The power of the old vines is palpable in this incredibly sophisticated wine, with really intense, complex red and blue forest fruit, held together by the upright purity and mineral structure from the granite soils. This is really special stuff, and a great example for those looking for a 'Burgundian' Moulin a Vent. L&S (Apr 2024)

At the upper edge of the medium-bodied range. Very long, complete finish that expands and expands as it flows over your palate. This blend comes from five different terroirs in Moulin-a-Vent, the large majority of which are on granite soils. From 50- to 70-year-old vines. Drink or hold. Rating: 94 Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com (Apr 2024)
The main cuvée of the domaine, bottled in December. This wine comes from mostly granitic soils in Greneriers, Burdelines, Aux Caves, Bruyères de Thorins and also Champ de Cours. The latter has a compact and complicated acid soil which does not make for seductive wines, but can bring tension to a blend. The wine has a black centre, with purple black rim. Graphite and pepper are evident on the nose as well as the dark and concentrated fruit. Keeps on kicking on the palate, even if the base is black fruit there is a brilliant lively energy which really delivers. Startlingly good! Drinking range: 2026 - 2032 Rating: ***** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Feb 2024)
Domaine Paul Janin et Fils
There’s an understated, almost bookish air about Eric Janin. Quietly spoken and clearly always thinking - Eric exudes a calm and reassured confidence. Nothing happens here by accident. Since its foundation just over a century ago by Eric's great-grandfather, the estate has grown from being a grower who sold their grapes to a proper 'domaine' who take care of every part of the process. Now at 8.5 HA Eric is fully satisfied: '..any larger and we cannot do the vineyards justice..' Such is the intensity of work that they do amongst the vines. The family has worked this land organically for as long as Eric can remember, and he's currently having this made official, he'll be certified for the 2023 releases.
The winery is traditional for this part of the world but notably pristine compared to many we visit. In the vineyard too the family's work is meticulous spending as much time as is needed, unsurprisingly the vines are in picture-perfect good health. 'Of course, this is where we spend our days,' says Eric 'this is where the wine is made!'. Everything is done by hand and under organic principles. Taking no shortcuts, they ensure they bring in the best fruit they can - and with a philosophy of minimal intervention in the cellar they’re crafting pure and pretty wines that brim with energy.
This is a range of wines that express with great clarity the family’s different vineyards and reflect Eric’s eye for detail and conscientious approach. Janin is making sophisticated Beaujolais here and is a gold-standard for Moulin à Vent.
Brilliant Beaujolais
Unfortunately, the word 'Beaujolais' has become all too readily attached to the word 'Nouveau'. There's nothing wrong with a bit of fun, and at its best the old Beaujolly Nouveau is fun with a party hat on. But there is a lot more to Beaujolais than young wines being raced across France in sports cars and fruity red wine with your breakfast.
Those in the know are starting to purr appreciatively over the wines of the Beaujolais crus. These are the villages whose wines are good enough to be elevated above the generic Beaujolais name and have been given their own appellations.
It's all Gamay, so bright crisp fruit is the story of the day, but there's more - there's a silky feel almost occasionally redolent of Pinot Noir and even an ability to improve with a little age. From the subtle delights of Fleurie to the gently peppered Morgon, albeit all on the light side, this is a case that will enhance any wine lovers cellar/wine rack/cupboard under the stairs.
Playful Pinks
The Beaujolais Collection (12-Bottle Case)
In November, the wine world turns its attention to one, joyous party: Beaujolais Nouveau Day. It’s a brilliant festival of the harvest, but it's just the warm-up act. The real, soul-stirring magic of the region lies just beyond, in the 'Crus'—ten villages that produce some of the best value, most delicious red wine on the planet.
This 12-bottle case (two of each wine) is your all-access pass to the entire celebration, guiding you from the joyous and fruity to the serious and cellar-worthy.
Your tour begins with the pure, bouncy charm of a classic Beaujolais-Villages from Domaine Rochette, the perfect, charming party wine. From there, you'll explore the 'Cru' of Brouilly, tasting the difference between the 'richly fruited' 'Les Mines' and the 'fragrant and lifted' Côte de Brouilly 'Les Grillés' from the meticulous Domaine Chevalier-Métrat.
Next, it's the 'structured and powerful' Fleurie 'Cuvée Tardive' from Clos de La Roilette, a historic farm that famously still uses its 1920s racehorse label.
The finale is the gold-standard of the region: two wines from Domaine Paul Janin et Fils in Moulin-à-Vent. This is where Beaujolais gets 'Burgundian'. You'll get to compare the 'Empreinte', a delicious introduction to the house style , with the 'Vignes du Tremblay', an incredibly sophisticated wine from 50- to 70-year-old vines on granite soils. It is, as our note says, 'startlingly good!'.
This case contains two bottles of each of the following six wines:
2x 2023 BEAUJOLAIS-VILLAGES, Domaine Rochette
2x 2023 BROUILLY 'Les Mines', Domaine Chevalier-Métrat
2x 2023 CÔTE DE BROUILLY 'Les Grillés', Domaine Chevalier-Métrat
