Grapefruit, wild flowers, crushed chalk, slightly waxy, toasty. In the mouth it is poised and elegant, zesty, but with fruit richness, again waxy/toasty but bright and deep, some nice grip and length. L&S (Apr 2024)

One vineyard, north-west-facing and more clay. Starts fermentation in tank but finishes and ages 3–4 months in barrel on lees. This is much more stony/mineral and less ripe than the Kratos. Intense, piercingly fresh and precise. Tight citrus fruit with barely a sense of the wood, except in the roundness and firm texture on the finish. Ripe peaches and minty herbs come together with dusty dried flowers and white smoke as the 2022 Pietraincatenata slowly blossoms in the glass. This is pure elegance on the palate, mixing ripe orchard fruits and green melon with saline minerals and candied citrus atop a stream of vibrant acidity. The 2022 tapers off with incredible length and youthful tension, yet it keeps the mouth watering for more. A salty flourish and hints of sour lime slowly taper off. Luigi Maffini
Luigi Maffini's vineyards are on the coast of Campania, south of Naples, across the bay from Positano, and planted with the local grapes, Fiano for the whites and Aglianico for the reds. While the family's first vines were planted in the seventies, the real beginning of this winery dates from 1996.
Luigi and his wife Raffaella are both graduates of Naples university in agricultural sciences. Luigi specialised in viticulture and winemaking. Ten years elapsed between our first tasting of his wines and getting Luigi 'on board', but he has now been with L&S since 2009.
Raffaella and Luigi run the vineyards organically, and share the land with their two children and three dogs, as well as hares, foxes, hedgehogs, hawks and wild boar, with which they are happy to live in peace. There are now two vineyard sites, at Castellabate and Giungano, so some of the wines are DOC Cilento and some DOC Paestum.
