64 Cabernet Sauvignon, 27 Merlot, 8 Cabernet Franc, 1 Petit Verdot: 80% new oak for 18-20 months: 13% alc: 3.71 pH: 63 IPT: Harvested between 24 September and 10 October Poyferré starts quietly with a lovely, gentle, dark-fruited nose, and then it grows relentlessly on the palate. The depth and sophistication here are a result of the epic terroir in perfect harmony with the fabulous viticultural team, whose efforts have been rewarded with a deeply resonant red and purple fruited wine that not only wows visitors but also seems to have shocked its creators with its precision. They are so close to their wines, and they know all too well how tiring this vintage was, and yet I always encourage vignerons to stand back and admire their portfolio of commendable wines. All too often, it is easy to become caught up in the minutiae and not realise just how unbelievably beautiful the wines are. This 2024 is a thoroughbred – and yet it is not a massive muscular beast, but one built for agility and performance. It is also a benchmark Poyferré, and this is what I most admire about its construction. Rating: 18.5+/20 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2025)

Impressive texture, slate wrapped in silky tannins, with real depth of flavour, black cherry and damson fruit, no dip through the mid palate, and a long finish. Maintains estate signature, shows generosity and confidence, one of the wines of the vintage. Alix Combe vineyard director, Isabelle David oenologist. Harvest 24 September to 10 October. 3.71 pH. 26.42 hl/ha. Drinking range: 2030 - 2048 Rating: 95 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2025)
A bit closed and almost steely at the moment. At the same time, there is depth and huge structure, showing black cherries, mulberries, fine spices and violets. Full-bodied, this has heaps of very small-grained, dusty tannins on the palate and a long finish. A concentrated wine. Wait and see. Rating: 94-95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2025)
64 CS 27 M 8 CF 1 PV 13% Lovely inviting violet and fresh sweet herb aromas with cassis and damson. A fine texture of clay and chalk minerals with supple tannins and juicy damson fruit. Like its neighbours, this has performed exceptionally well in this difficult vintage, and credit to the team here for what was obviously a great deal of work and care. Rating: 92 Rod Smith MW, www.timatkin.com (Apr 2025)
Château Léoville Poyferré
St Julien Deuxième cru 1855 When Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferré de Cères married the grand-daughter of the Marquis de Las-Cases-Beauvoir, he inherited a portion of the grand old Leoville estate. The Poyferré family owned the estate for long enough to see the granting of Second Growth status in common with the other Leovilles but, in time, oidium and financial difficulties led them to sell Leoville Poyferré. Eventually, it came in to the ownership of the Cuvelier family who own Poyferré to this day. For most of the 20th Century, compared to its namesake neighbours, Leoville Poyferré's fortunes waned as the quality of the wines fell back. Since 1980, however, considerable improvements have been made to the chais and the vineyards. The previously high proportion of Merlot has reduced, whilst the amount of Cabernet Sauvignon has risen to about 65% (Merlot is now a more Médoc-like 25%). Today, Leoville Poyferré can be seen on an equal footing with, at least, Leoville Barton. Grapes are fermented in stainless-steel, and then spend 18 to 20 months in oak (75% new). In the early years on the 20th Century, the cru bourgeois property of Château Moulin Riche was absorbed into Leoville Poyferré. The name was briefly resurrected as the name of Poyferré's second wine, although it is now produced as a wine in its own right from the vineyards of the old château. A second wine of both properties is Pavillon de Poyferré.
