In 2024 this is down to just 3.5 barrels from his normal of 5.5 - which is sad as the wine is superb. However, this remains rather a good yield for red in 2024. As Stephane explained - this year the terroirs have really lived up to their reputations - and justified their classification. This Grand Cru has all the class and sophistication you would hope for - despite the season - and they even managed to make a good quantity compared to elsewhere. Stephane's vines are at the heart of the original Clos Saint Denis which was just 3.3 HA. It has grown 'recently to double that - but purists will explain - it simply is not the same in the new parcels..! Limestone adds lovely a noble, grand Pinot feel. This always has a super fine touch. For Stephane this is the best parcel he has. 60 year old vines. Lots of millerandage here too. Long and so persistent. Really smart Pinot character - goes on with real class. Mid crimson colour, not the deepest. 3.5 barrels made – plus 30 litres, insists Stéphane! Quite a dense, heady nose, crushed strawberry, not a flamboyant Clos St-Denis but with good heart. Ripe enough on the palate, some liquid dark raspberry with the strawberry, relatively mouthfilling, a little spice at the finish. For Stéphane, this wine demonstrates a good balance between the weight of the clay and the lighter style from the limestone Drinking range: 2032 - 2038 Rating: 93-96 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Jan 2026)
Bottled December after barrel ageing. 20–30% whole bunch and 30–35% new oak. Mid crimson. Smells a little riper/sweeter than the Morey Faconnières. More oak in evidence and the whole bunch has increased the presence of the tannins. Keep away for now! Promising. Drinking range: 2031 - 2040 Rating: 17+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2026)
Domaine Stéphane Magnien
Stéphane's is a small domaine, a mere 4.5 hectares, with one full hectare of that in regional wine - Passetoutgrains and Bourgogne - but it is blessed with two Grands Crus and also a long history of not messing with nature. No pesticides have ever been used on this land, and the plants are nearly all the old 'Pinot tordu' - twisted Pinot with its gnarly stems which are less vigorous than the modern clones and said by many to make wines with more finesse.
Stéphane chaptalizes only to extend fermentations - these are wines which his father Jean-Paul used to describe as 'sage en alcool' - from 12 to 13% - the old vines do not make much alcohol. Wood use is also discreet, even though Stéphane has increased the proportion, he does not exceed 50% new wood on the Grands Crus, 25% on the Premiers Crus and on the village appellations, 15% new wood for one year only, then all into older barrels.
Stéphane says that he aims to make wines with more richness than his father's, 'but not black angular wines which have less relief. Wines which leave your mouth clean and clear, refreshed and revived and, above all, wanting another glass'. He destems 100%, gives the grapes a six-day maceration, then a classical fermentation with just two pigeages, and a little remontage (pumping over) at the end.
