White Foil Brut Champagne Pol Roger
|Grapes||Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay|
One of the great classics, this is another firm favourite and consistently very high in quality. It's not just us that love it - Winston Churchill had a real passion for Pol and white foil was the fizz of choice for Kate and William who served it at Buckingham Palace for their wedding reception. 33% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay and 33% Pinot Meunier, The Brut Réserve blend is traditionally composed from around 30 still base wines, from different vineyard sites. The base wine for this blend is from 2008 with reserve wine from 2007 and 2006. Clarification of the must was at 8°C. The second fermentation took place in cellars beneath Épernay at 9°C. All hand-riddled, the youngest component will have a minimum age of 3 years. Richard Hemming - www.JancisRobinson.com
Pol Roger’s white label is always elegant; now it is also glittering. The house has been increasing its vineyard sites in prime areas and is now 50 per cent self-sufficient in grapes. A blend of all three champagne grapes. Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Nov 2016)
There is better depth here compared to either the Rich or the Pure cuvées with most emphasis on yeast nuances along with floral, citrus and pear that complement the round, delicious and layered flavors that are drier than the Rich but this is not an especially dry effort. As also noted with the Rich, this will best suit those who prefer something that is not aggressively crisp or dry. Rating: 89-89 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com
Fortunately this ultra-stylish NV Brut Champagne from Pol Roger is widely available, so it's worth looking out for current special offers for a fizz that's consistently one of the best non-vintage cuvées around, here showing a fine nose of subtle biscuity richness and a precision of pure ripe fruit enveloped in a finely textured mousse that subtly implodes on the tongue and hangs on in there for a long, stylish dry finish. Rating: 92 www.thewinegang.com (Jun 2016)
A complex array of red berry fruits, citrus and peach aromas with a flinty, almost smoky edge here too. The palate's big on flavor, quiet fleshy and full of impact. Fresh peach and nectarine flavors lead, ahead of citrus and more savory chalky and nutty flavors to close. Rating: 91 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jul 2015)
Renowned for its gorgeously creamy, white flowers and candied fruit-stashed style, this family owned champagne was once only reserved for Great Britain. Jane MacQuitty, The Times (Dec 2014)
Delicious biscuit and autumn fruit character – seems a bit sweeter than in the past? Developing, oxidative notes on the nose, but nothing worrying. Exemplary stuff. Rating: 17 Richard Hemming - www.JancisRobinson.com
Champagne Pol Roger
Champagne Pol Roger is one of the very few remaining houses still owned and run by the founding family, who remain responsible for the winemaking and selection of the cuvées each year. Originally founded in Aÿ in 1849 by Pol Roger, the firm then moved to Épernay in 1851. The First World War had a huge impact on the firm, putting any expansion plans to rest, and Prohibition in America made exports much more difficult. During the Second World War when the Germans occupied France, all production and buying of Champagne was controlled by the Wehrmacht. However, the War caused Winston Churchill to become a prominent figurehead throughout the world, and his love of Pol Roger was widely known. So much so that the House created their special Cuvée Winston Churchill in 1975.
