En Rama Gonzales Byass

Grapes Palomino
Origin Spain, Sherry
ABV 15%

Only the top casks are selected to be bottled 'en rama' each year and in 2019 the cellar master, Antonio Flores, found 67 barrels that were worthy out of 21,000! So the quantities are limited but the results are astonishing. En rama is the purest and freshest expression of Fino sherry you can find. It lasts well but is so good when enjoyed as soon as it lands for that 'in bodega' experience. Mid-yellow colour with some pale green and golden inflections. This is powerfully aromatic with a distinctive yeasty 'flor' character. Intense and savoury, but not over-bearing. There is a delicious mineral, saline tang that peps up the mid-palate. The weight is great this year and the length is remarkable, this goes on and on and has super lift. Complex and layered, there is so much to taste yet it all draws together so well with a clean, citrusy finish. Drink this chilled in the sunshine with the classics: salted almonds, olives or seafood. Quite simply this is Jerez - bottled. L&S (May 2019)

Salt and a bit of flor/mould flavour too – this is so similar to cheese in flavour profile! Exquisite fruit, which is beautifully crunchy and fresh, juxtaposing the funkiness. Lengthy, floral, perfumed. Compared with the older bottlings this is obviously more youthful in style, and has plenty of fuel in the tank for ageing. Drinking range: 2019 - 2030 Rating: 17.5 Richard Hemming MW - www.JancisRobinson.com(May 2019)

Gonzales Byass

In 1835, a young man called Manuel María González Angel arrived in Jerez, intent on making a name for himself in the thriving and lucrative sherry business. Encouraged by the consistent growth in exports, that same year he purchased a small winery and began to produce and export his own wines. This was the start of Bodegas Tío Pepe which, due to the firm’s increasing success, became the González Byass company soon afterwards. Today, Bodegas Tío Pepe is known around the world as one of the leading producers of sherry and Brandy de Jerez.
