CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE BARTON
2003 2ème Cru Classé Saint Julien
|Grapes||Merlot, Cab Franc, Cab Sauv|
|Classification||2ème Cru Classé|
Majoring on gourmet chargrilled black cherries, you feel the heat of the vintage, but in its exotic expression rather than a dusty one - there is clear integrity in the fruit, which is helped perhaps by the estates location close to the river. Luscious, with exotic spices; elegant and holding together well/ Ready to drink now but will hold on. Drinking range: 2017 - 2032 Rating: 93 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jul 2017)
*Case price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.
Very intensely concentrated wine this year from Barton, lovely texture, if with a less smooth and velvety texture - here the tannins are wilder and the flavours full of layers and excitement. Hugely concentrated with spices, cinnamon and vanilla mixed in with the taut black fruit. Very long, very powerful, it seems likely to be in need of twenty years to full maturity. This is despite a two week maceration rather than the usual three. Looking at the vats they thought they had about the same quantity as in 2002, but at the 'écoulage', it became clear that there was less - it was all in the skins. Could rate higher in the long run, but a wine for the patient.L&S(Mar 2005)
A spectacular success, the opaque plum-colored 2003 Leoville Barton is still on the young side of its plateau of maturity. It exhibits a striking bouquet of forest floor and black currants as well as a full-bodied, exuberant, youthful style, an opaque plum/ruby color, a lot of complexity, and striking depth and richness. This is a profound, stunning effort from Anthony Barton and his team. Bravo! It should continue to provide immense pleasure for 20-30 years. 2014-2044 Rating: 96 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com(Aug 2014)
The mix of cassis and black cherry is rich and ripe filling out the nose and giving depth of flavour on the palate. Behind the richness of the fruit and the liquorice there is a balancing freshness with lots of sweet fruit on the finish. 2013-18 Rating: 92 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk(Dec 2013)
One cannot admire enough proprietor Anthony Barton and his classic, potentially long-lived wines that are models of power, elegance, and longevity – in short, these wines symbolize what makes Bordeaux so world-renowned! Probably capable of rivaling the 2000, the uncompromisingly made, formidably powerful, masculine, and highly extracted 2003 has an inky purple color to the rim, a big, deep personality with a tight but promising nose of forest floor, creme de cassis, smoke, charcoal, licorice, and perhaps even truffle. It is layered, rich, and set for an exceptionally long life, but don’t expect to get a lot of joy even in this somewhat overtly styled vintage for at least another 7-8 years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030+. Rating: 95+ Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com(Mar 2005)
