Loic says the nose is gentle - then boom in the mouth. - he's right! Intense and mouth-coating, some grip too mind you. Deeply flavoured, stewed, dark cherry, baked plums with pepper and green pepper notes. Lovely black currents too - but 'a point' and pure again. This flows, quite powerful, quite firm for Charmes with long, persistent flavour and energy building up in the mouth. The spice grows and grows as well, good acidity. Never too ripe, poised and intense. L&S (Nov 2017)

Contains one-third Mayozères since 1996. 60% whole bunch. 100% new oak. Lost 20% to frost. Very juicy indeed, and concentrated. No easy charm but hard-won through great density and precision. Solid with a dramatic undertow. Clean finish. Drinking range: 2025 - 2037 Rating: 17++ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Nov 2017)

The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru was reduced in quantity by around 15% due to the frost. It includes 50% whole cluster. There was quite a lot of reduction on the nose here that made the aromatics difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied, quite sinewy for a Charmes-Chambertin, slightly chalky in texture, and if I am honest, I prefer the Fonteny and Lavaux Saint-Jacques that seem to possess more delineation and tension on the finish. Let’s see how this performs in bottle. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

(some frost here reduced the crop by 20%; two-thirds Charmes and one-third Mazoyères; vinified with 50% whole clusters): A sexy note of reduction to the aromas of blackberry, mocha, espresso, animal fur and violet. Thick and densely packed but fine-grained--and hard to taste owing to the strong element of reduction. A bit stunted and sauvage today but the wine's ripe, dusty tannins spread out horizontally to saturate the palate. This is reduced straight through to the finish, but its impressive concentration and late-arriving minerality are quite promising. Today I prefer the Lavaux for its class but I may be underestimating this wine. Rating: 92-94 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jan 2018)
