Nose is rich, powerful well perfumed. Pretty red fruits. then on the palate - A cherry skin pique, good fun energy zips though this. Grip, super fine, ripe tannin - builds in mouth - but this has great flow, great precision and length. Just tightly wound for now. Balanced poised and deep. Lovely ripeness, great acid, great mineral feel. Taut and focused, but completely yummy. L&S (Oct 2017)

(from a parcel situated by the Château at the top of the slope and just below the climat known as Le Musigni; on the old maps, it was designated as Montiotes Hautes). A slightly riper though still extremely fresh nose features notes of plum and dark berry fruit liqueur aromas that are trimmed in discreet wood nuances. The velvety full-bodied flavors are blessed with plenty of dry extract that coats the mouth and buffers the notably firm tannins on the explosively long finish. Despite the seductive texture of the mid-palate the overall impression of this understated yet powerful effort is both very serious and notably austere. (just four barrels produced; my sample was a blend of all of them): Dark red-ruby color. Very deep aromas of black cherry and crushed dark raspberry lifted by subtle treble notes of white pepper and flowers. Densely packed and wonderfully velvety and full; perhaps a bit less refined than the Ruchottes due to the smaller crop and impression of chewy extract, but this wine boasts terrific definition, not to mention suave, fully ripe tannins for Clos Vougeot. Finishes lively, subtle and very long, with building richness. This fruit was harvested at 12.9% potential alcohol and the wine should age for a long time on its sheer strength of material. Splendid. The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru was matured in 70% new oak just like the Ruchottes-Chambertin. It usually produces up to six barrels, but there are only four this year. It has a very well-defined bouquet with superb delineation and perhaps just a touch more vigor than the Ruchottes. The palate is medium-bodied with disarming purity, wonderful tension and mineralité, with an almost crystalline, licorice-tinged finish. This is the standout from Mugneret-Gibourg this year, an astonishingly accomplished and damn delicious, quite profound Clos de Vougeot. Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
