Chaignots is to the North of the Village of Nuits - but on the Vosne side - so it really does display some 'Vosne' characteristics. More elegance - more lift than many Nuits. "Nuits 'a coté Vosne" as they say here. On the attack there us such a lovely amplitude, yet it is perky too - great acidity - lovely and bright. But really sensational intensity of bright fruit. Creamy pep of crunchy red currants. The fruit has depth and the tannins are silky. THis is an energetic, joy-filled wine - a beautiful, sensual elegant Nuits Saint George. This spends 18 months in barrel. 45% New Wood, 4 coopers - all light toasting. 2 months assemblage in Inox to settle. No fining or filtering. Bottled in same room as the élevage takes place - so there is minimal movement and manipulation of the juice. L&S (Oct 2017)

The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has an impressive bouquet with well defined black cherry, raspberry, spicebox and rose petal aromas. Hints of Vervane tea emerge with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well judged acidity, silky smooth in texture. I might have dialed down the level of new oak here, but that sheen that it lends to the texture makes it very seductive and it makes it feel very long. It just does not quite deliver the personality of the best wines from the appellation. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. More subtle if not invisible wood sets off the earthier and more evidently Nuits-like nose of red raspberry, dark cherry and whiffs of the sauvage. The more mineral-driven and sleekly muscular flavors possess a beguiling sense of underlying tension that continues onto the driving, super-intense and saline-inflected finish. Bright, dark red with ruby tones. Very rich, ripe aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate and violet. Fleshier and sweeter than the Vignes Rondes, but with lovely spicy lift and a touch of menthol austerity contributing definition and shape. Finishes spicy and long, with fine-grained tannins totally enrobed by the wine's mid-palate extract. Complex, saline and strong. Rating: 91-93 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2018)

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
