CHÂTEAU CLARKE

2018 Cru Bourgeois Listrac-Medoc

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Listrac-Medoc
Classification Cru Bourgeois
ABV 13%

This is an Haut Médoc that hasn't drifted into over-ripeness. It's concentrated and there's plenty of Listrac structure but it's juicy with red and black fruit and there's a good line of acidity too. This is definitely one of the better balanced wines from this commune. Very drinkable and the tannins are not too drying. One of the better Clarkes we have tasted. Drinking range: 2022 - 2030 L&S (Apr 2019)

Lots of spiced plum and chocolate on the nose with blueberry and hazelnut. It’s full-bodied with firm, smooth tannins. Polished. 70% merlot and 30% cabernet sauvignon. Drink from 2024. Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Feb 2021)

Inky crimson. Dark-fruited and rather secretive. Charry and really dark on the palate, all closed-in but surprisingly harmonious in a soberly dry sort of way. The fruit is all there, it’s just not expressive. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 16 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2019)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Clarke gives up notions of warm blackberries, black cherries and incense with a core of blackcurrant cordial and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm frame of chewy tannins and a seamless line of freshness lifting the black fruit to a spicy finish. Rating: 87-89 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Apr 2019)

Château Clarke

Château Clarke is named after the Irish family who bought it in 1771. After more than two centuries of winemaking here, the property was acquired by Baron Edmond de Rothschild in 1973. The vineyard was completely restructured, the buildings renovated and the winemaking facilities improved. the 55 hectares of vines are on clay and limestone which is particularly good for Merlot, and it is this which dominates, the mix being 70% Merlot to 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Manually harvested and transported in crates, the grapes are sorted on arrival and put into tanks by gravity. The wines are then aged in oak barrels (70% new, 30% one-year old), where they are refined for 14 to 18 months.
