Sleek! It seems to be the Ruchottes which has the wildness this year. Richly enveloping, a huge weight of velvety black fruit. Very black expression, deep and rather amazing, even if in some ways a slightly surprising expression from this cuvée which is usually more tensile. L&S (Dec 2019)

(from a parcel situated by the Château at the top of the slope designated as Montiotes Hautes). A very ripe yet still reasonably fresh nose grudgingly reveals notes of poached plum, cassis, warm earth and a touch of forest floor. The big-bodied flavors possess a highly seductive texture that is at once opulent and velvety, all wrapped in a robust, powerful and exceptionally firm finish that exhibits outstanding length. Even so, this is one big Clos de Vougeot that is going to require a very long snooze in a cool cellar. Drinking range: 2038 - Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2020)

Another masterpiece in the making from the Mugneret family is the 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, a stunning young wine that unwinds in the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of cherries, wild berries, exotic spices, peonies, rose petals and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with a layered and concentrated core, strikingly refined tannins, lively acids and a long, resonant finish. This is always a Clos Vougeot that nods to nearby Musigny, and that has never been truer than in the 2018 vintage. Rating: 96-98 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is matured in 70% new oak. It has an exquisite bouquet of vivacious red cherry and wild strawberry fruit infused with superb mineralité and displaying great precision. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a touch of dark chocolate on the entry and lithe, saturated tannins on the silky finish. Wonderful. Drinking range: 2023 - 2042 Rating: 95-97 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2020)

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
