GEVREY CHAMBERTIN

A slightly riper and overtly floral nose combines notes of red currant and red raspberry liqueur with those of sauvage, forest floor and freshly turned earth. The palate impression of the moderately big-bodied flavors is again super-sleek thanks to the relatively fine grain of the supporting tannins that shape the firm, austere and powerful finish. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques is once again immensely promising, soaring from the glass with a head-turning bouquet that mingles aromas of wild berries, orange rind, peonies and woodsmoke with savory nuances of black truffled, rich soil tones and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, with racy acids, powdery tannins and a long, mineral finish. The 2018 was vinified with 70% whole clusters and matured in 66% new oak—a notable if hardly advertised change for a cuvée that historically always saw 100% new barrels. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a very pure bouquet, quite intense but with a greater proportion of red fruit compared to other cuvées. The palate is underpinned by fine tannins. Very compact at the moment and displaying an almost vitamin-like intensity toward the finish. Blood orange lingers on the aftertaste.
