Vineyard Coeur de Roy

The Coeur de Roy is a mix of the family’s old vine plots in Gevrey. All are now more than 50 years old and some are up to 110 years old. A great compote of red smashed summer fruit and cassis. There is a good Gevrey frame here too. Beefy - but still sleek. And with good acidity. Blacker fruits and good menthol notes. Power and pleasure. Defined and real fruit lines with good lift. A meagre harvest here always - this year between 20-30 HL/HA. L&S (Nov 2019)

An equally floral and very fresh nose offers up notes ripe cassis, black raspberry, earth and plenty of sauvage nuances. The exceptionally rich and caressing medium-bodied flavors terminate in a dusty, youthfully austere and palate coating finish that makes it clear that this robust effort is built-to-age. Drinking range: 2030 - Rating: 91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

Unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of peonies, wild berries, cherries and loamy soil, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roy is full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, endowed with real texture and mid-palate amplitude. Muscular and concentrated, it's beautifully complete, with lively acids and refined if abundant tannins. From barrel, I suggested that readers might think of this particular rendition of Dugat-Py's emblematic communal Gevrey as a baby Charmes-Chambertin, and that contention holds up in bottle. Drinking range: 2028 - 2058 Rating: 93 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roy is also showing very well, bursting with aromas of cassis, black cherries, dark chocolate, smoked meats, licorice and rich loamy soil. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and voluminous, with an enveloping core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, lingering finish. This is one cuvée where the better-integrated barrel régime and lighter touch with extraction really make themselves felt, and readers might wish to think of this year's Coeur du Roy as a baby Charmes-Chambertin. As usual, it derives from vines between 50 and 109 years of age located in the lieux-dits Epointures, Combe du Dessus, Jouise and Les Marchais. It was vinified with around 50% whole cluster (10% more than 2017) and matured in 50% new oak (10% less than 2017). Rating: 91-93 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)
