40% whole bunch. One of the samples in this tasting that was possibly a little tired on the first nose, but fascinating:- very deep rich nose of ripe fruit and spice. Supple tannins which are very ripe, but there's lots here, still juicy and the acidity seems fine; amazingly long. A bit of a monster but a very exciting one: "complexity and elegance" says Véronique. L&S (Nov 2019)

An exuberantly spicy and ultra-floral-inflected nose conveys notably ripe yet fresh aromas of plum, black raspberry and more subtle touch of wood. There is excellent mid-palate concentration to the delicious and mouth coating larger-scaled flavors that are finer while still displaying terrific power on the youthfully austere and equally serious finale. This is a big Grands Ech with a tannic spine to match to this is a ‘buy and forget you own it’ wine. Drinking range: 2038 - Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Apr 2020)

The 2018 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru, which comes from the namesake lieu-dit, is one of Véronique Drouhin’s favorite crus and, in her opinion, one of their most consistent. It has a very well-defined bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, pressed iris flowers and incense that immediately seduces the senses. The palate is medium-bodied with fine supple tannins and a perfect line of acidity, the 40% whole cluster lending a little pepperiness toward the pixelated finish. This is unequivocally a Grand Vin. Drinking range: 2023 - 2050 Rating: 95-97 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2020)

Deep cherry red. Ripe and dark on the nose. Savoury and rocky too. The fruit profile is ripe but the tannins add great freshness. This is dry and dark but suggesting a lovely fragrance as it opens. Long, dry and fresh with a savoury aftertaste. Drinking range: 2025 - 2038 Rating: 17.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2019)

Domaine Joseph Drouhin

Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and still family owned, are one of the most well-respected names in Burgundy, especially through their flagship wine, the iconic Clos des Mouches.

A huge part of the Drouhin production comes from their own domaine fruit (78 hectares), and much of the rest comes from contracts such as that with the Marquis de Laguiche, who shook hands with the grandfather of the current generation, agreeing to let him manage his vineyards which included an important part of Le Montrachet; this collaboration endures. Today, the fourth generation is at the helm

Small refinements continue to be made here. The presses have been changed - a reversion to basket pressing for the reds, and for whites the presses are open - along with a number of other growers they are following the trend to think that slight oxidation of the juice before fermentation is not a problem and may add complexity as well as avoiding later problems of premature oxidation in bottle.

For the reds there has been the introduction of selective whole-bunch fermentation in the Côte de Nuits wines. The house style remains one that 'emphasises the natural elegance of great Burgundies' as they describe it. The domaine is all cultivated with an organic and biodynamic approach.
