The 2019 Tertre-Rôteboeuf has an intriguing bouquet that requires some time to open in the glass, revealing a mixture of red and black fruit, enticing scents of melted tar and black truffle, and a touch of licorice, the latter becoming more and more noticeable with aeration. The medium-bodied palate delivers pliant tannins, sensual, slightly savory red fruit mixed with white pepper, sage and red peppercorns, and a touch of tobacco on the finish. This fans out wonderfully, lingering long in the mouth. Superb. Drinking range: 2025 - 2050 Rating: 96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Tertre-Rôteboeuf is fabulous. In most vintages, Tertre-Rôteboeuf is exuberant, but in 2019 it is a bit more strict, a bit more linear in construction. That's not a bad thing at all, it just means the 2019 might need a few years in bottle to be at its very best. Black cherry, espresso, licorice, new leather and menthol gradually open in the glass. I especially like the energy here. Drinking range: 2029 - 2049 Rating: 96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Tertre-Rôteboeuf is a wine of breeding and gravitas that is going to need a number of years to come into its own. Today, it is tight and unyielding, with swaths of tannin that frame a core of intense fruit. Hints of red cherry jam, blood orange, spice, mint and rose petal open up with a bit of air, but only reluctantly. A Saint-Émilion of stunning beauty, the 2019 Tertre-Rôteboeuf is shaping up to be one of the highlights of the vintage. Rating: 94-96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jun 2020)

A vintage of character is always the result of rather strange conditions. We try to understand, but it is frequently hard to give reasons for the eventual character of certain vintages; such is the case with 2019. This year’s wine appears to be full of expression, supple, full of ripe and bright fruit, and in contrast to that from a year of great heat and concentration (think 2016). A very fine vintage, packed with personality and its own particular charm. - Francois MitjavileWinemaker's notes (May 2020)

Château Le Tertre Rôteboeuf

The cellar at Tertre Rôteboeuf is something to behold. Dark, unpretentious with vine roots growing along the walls - it's the complete opposite of the grandeur experienced at other Right Bank Châteaux. Very refreshing indeed. It is a slice of the best sort of Burgundian charm nestled amongst the local grandees. Francois Mitjavile has the air of a chaotic creative - but this cellar is beautifully ordered and he fashions wines of stunning beauty here, aromatic and wonderfully complex. Year after year. This 6HA property remains a hard to get hold of Cult classic and a visit here is a real highlight of our annual trip to the region. In 1987 he purchased a second property in the Côtes de Bourg, Roc des Cambes. The wines here share much of the family feel and are well worth hunting out too.
