CONDRIEU

2020 Légende Bonnetta Clos de la Bonnette

Grapes Viognier
Colour White
Origin France, Rhône
District Northern Rhône
Village Condrieu
ABV 13%

The fruit for this wine comes from 1.5h of organically farmed vineyard in the Cote Bonnette, these are beautifully looked after and cared for vines. A quick look to the left and you can see the bare soil of Isabelle & Henri's neighbour, but not here, where wildflowers and grasses grow between the rows. The 2020 'Legende Bonnetta' is an absolute joy to drink, I would imagine it could keep for 3-8 years but I challenge anyone with the will power to resist immediate drinking because this just in a fabulous place right now. Full of apricot & floral peach notes, white flowers are abundant in the mouth with acacia, green tea & hints of ginger in the background, a nice touch of acidity too, a real beauty & worth every penny. Tasted at L&S Rhône Tasting - 20/09/2022
I love the intensity and the expressiveness of this wine, there's a spiciness almost like an Alphonso mango. Only medium-bodied, but very fresh, direct and full of energy. It's actually quite introverted right now, so I would wait a year, then it should be worthy of the score. One year in 228-litre ex-Viognier or ex-Chardonnay barrels, at least two wines old. No enzymes added, a little battonage, malolactic completed, no fining with some filtration just to remove the larger particles.
Drinking range: 2023 - 2026 Rating: 96 Matt Walls, Decanter.com (Sept 2022)

With a clean, fresh and aerial style, this is softly generous and juicy but not excessively full-bodied. Beautifully balanced acidity, it's soft and flowing. A natural, poetic style of Condrieu that's perfectly balanced, not as powerful as 2019 but so beautiful and classic. Just a touch on the light side perhaps, but so good. Clos de la Bonnette

A new (ish) find, having tasted at trade shows and fairs in France, we were then thrilled that Matt Walls went so far as to list the 'Legende Bonnetta' cuvée as his top Condrieu from the 2019 vintage - a strong field with some fairly serious contenders! Husband and wife team Isabelle & Henri are fully certified organic, they had been farming fruit and vegetables in the region since the 1970s but since 2009 have focused solely on the vine. They make some very compelling wines from a tiny 5 hectare estate, split between Condrieu and two sites in Côte Rôtie. Tasting these in London turned us into wide-eyed children – the wines are truly magical and surpassed our already elevated expectations. The Côte Rôtie and Condrieu are gorgeous – so sleek and polished, with a nose that you just want to dive into. We were also hugely impressed with the IGP Syrah – made with 35-45 year old vines, this was a delight.
