Its old rose petal colour combined with reflections of southern tiles gives it a brilliant appearance. The red-berry aromas are dominated by fresh raspberry and blackberry. In the mouth, it has fruity notes with a smooth, tender taste balanced out by a mineral aftertaste. This wine expresses all its charm by its simplicity and its well balanced texture. One of our earliest champagne grower signings the fabulous Legras family make supremely elegant Champagnes based on the top class Chardonnays from the village of Chouilly, at the start of the Côte des Blancs, just outside Épernay. All their wines are 'Blanc de Blancs' - with no Pinot Noir or Pinot Meunier. (Except the rosé,of course!). Well known and highly respected in France it is used by a surprising number of Parisian restaurants as 'house' champagne, including the Tour d'Argent.
Pink bubbles - how delightfully decadent is that? And it doesn't come more delightfully decadent and pink and fizzy than Rosé Champagne. Some of Champagne's most interesting wines are those made by the smaller 'grower' producers. Witness the Pinot heavy wines of Barnaut in Bouzy, and the mostly Chardonnay R&L Legras from Chouilly. And for sheer 'wow' appeal, there is the extraordinary 100% Pinot Noir rosé de saignée from Larmandier-Bernier at Vertus. Of the more famous names, there is a deserved cult following for Billecart-Salmon Rosé - drier than its rivals with a freshness to the fruit that is delightful. Then there's the lush berried embrace of Gosset from Champagne's oldest producer. And for luxury, there is the 2011 Vintage Louis Roederer Rosé Champagne - a small amount of wood ageing and longer time on the lees for a touch more complexity and ageing ability.
