2021 Burgundy En Primeur
Everyone has now heard that the 2021 vintage was very badly affected by the frosts in early April, which followed a period of unseasonably warm weather in the second fortnight of March. This provoked an early bud break, particularly in Chardonnay, and the frosts of 5-8th April were devastating, as the figures quoted by every grower about their yields attest. As we sit here in January with reports of 20C temperatures in Switzerland, one can only fear that this sort of occurrence will become more frequent.
The effects of the frost are at their worst in the C么te Chalonnaise and in the whites of the C么te de Beaune, but nowhere escaped entirely - there is more on this in the sections about each region.
Quantitively 2021 was a bit of a disaster, but qualitatively it's a different story.
No one is going to claim that 2021 is some 'vintage of the century', but the wines are good, in both white, there they are cleanly fine and citrussy, often with surprising concentration and length, and in red, where again there is often good concentration and the tannins are chalk fine and nicely ripe, making the wines very juicily attractive, in a style that will be welcome to many Burgundy fans who have found that the recent hot years have made wines more in power than finesse. This is a vintage you definitely want to have in your cellar, one of those vintages which may never have gained the epithet 'great' but which will surprise on the upside with a little age.
Domaine Hubert Lamy and Domaine Dureuil-Janthial are now releasing their wines a year or more later, so that we will be offering their 2020s soon, along with the 2020 Montagnys from Domaine Maxime Cottenceau and a small range of 2020 C么te d'Or excellence in both colours from Laurent Ponsot.
