Medium colour. Very fruity nose and attack, sweet expression, some of which is coming from the slightly obvious oak. But the fruit is dominant and the whole mouthful is very harmonious, fine, silky and velvety at the same time as being fresh, dry and supple. Lovely but not quite the stuffing for greatness? Very much in the style of classic Palmer though. Rating: 92 L&S (Apr 2005)

A more classic year than the 2003 or 2005 on either side, really showing beautifully right now, still young but full of promise, tension and juice. This is an extremely elegant, balanced Palmer, with dark berry fruits, cassis and blackberry, touch of campfire smoke, salinity and plenty of juice running through the muscular tannins. Plays with you on the finish, stretching out its flavours, salivating, totally gorgeous, suprisingly so for a vintage that can get overlooked. One that you could happily open now, or hold for another decade or more. Harvest September 27 to October 12, 60% new oak. Thomas Duroux's first vintage as director. This stunning wine is one of the vintage’s great successes. Administrator Thomas Duroux has fashioned a modern day version of Palmer’s brilliant 1966. Displaying a rare combination of power and elegance, this dense purple-colored offering exhibits notes of blackberries, truffles, flowers, incense, and camphor. Long, classic, and medium to full-bodied with stunning texture and richness, this superb effort is a candidate for the finest Margaux of the vintage. This is a stunning Palmer considering the growing season and for this writer, on par with Chateau Margaux. It has a deep garnet/purple hue. The nose is divine: pure black fruits, bilberry, cedar and a touch of iodine all with fabulous definition. The palate is full-bodied with very fine tannins, modern in style but exuding pedigree and class. Very refined on the finish with just a slight peppery edge. Love this wine, love it! Château Palmer

Margaux Troisième cru 1855 What is now Château Palmer was originally part of a larger Château d'Issan but was divided among heirs and came into the ownership of the Gascq family in 1748. The widow of the last of the Gascqs, in 1814, and apparently having met him on a stagecoach, sold the estate to an Englishman, General Charles Palmer, and Château de Gascq became Château Palmer. He extended the estate and built quite a reputation for his wines (especially in London) but financial difficulties forced him to sell up in 1843 and, by the time of the 1855 classification, the reputation of Château Palmer had slipped sufficiently to rate "only" 3rd Growth status - a status it has exceded for most of its subsequent history. The present château was built at the end of the 1850's. In 1938 the Société Civile de Château Palmer was formed to take ownership of the estate, with the Sichel and Mähler-Besse families as leading shareholders, a situation which persists to this day. Château Palmer sits between Margaux and Cantenac, just east of Issan. The 55ha of vines are planted to 47% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with the balance being Petit Verdot. The Grand Vin spends 21 months in wood (45% new). The second wine is Alter Ego de Château Palmer. In the best years of General Palmer's reign, the wines of Château Palmer were regarded on a par with those of Château Margaux and, indeed, during the worst years of the 1960's Palmer probably had a better reputation. Today, despite huge improvements by its neighbours, Palmer sits very squarely as the leading Margaux estate that isn't actually Château Margaux.
