The rich and indulgent 2009 Vintage Brut is made up of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. All the Pinot comes from the family's Grand Cru vineyards in Verzenay which adds a full-on, powerful dimension to the blend. Just over a third of the wine is vinified in old oak tuns with weekly bâtonnage adding intensity and complexity - there is no Malolactic fermentation here either. Roederer age this cuvée for about four years on the lees before disgorgement and then a further six months to settle in the cellars before release. The dosage is 9 g/l. L&S (Jun 2017)

Estate bottled, so always from same 10 parcels, chosen for their style. Soil is more influential than blend. From 7 ha in Verzenay on chalk and clay. The Pinot Noir is a bit austere with some oyster shells. Plus 3 ha of south-east-facing Chouilly Chardonnay. 70% very cool Pinot Noir and 30% ripe Chardonnay fermented separately. Sometimes one of the 10 blocks is not used. Up to 50% of the Pinot is fermented in large old oak. No malo. They released the 2009 before the 2008. Dosage 8 g/l. Broad, savoury nose – really quite meaty! Lots of depth on the nose. Racy, bone dry and rather majestic on the palate. Big and bold.
