CONDRIEU

2017 Les Ravines Domaine Rémi Niero

EN PRIMEUR

The 2017 Condrieu Les Ravines has a hint of grey/pink in its color and offers more white peach, honeyed minerality, and white flowers in its medium-bodied, supple yet crisp style. As with all these 2017s from Niero, it has the more supple, charming style of the vintage, is impeccably made, and well worth seeking out. Rating: 91 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Dec 2019)

A selection of Roncharde, Côte de Chatillon, La Caille, Vergelas and Corbery, average age of vines 20 years from decomposed granite soils. 30% Aged in oak, 10% in concrete eggs and 60% in stainless steel. Planted on steep hillside ‘chaillets’, all manual harvest – a blend of five sites with average vine age of 20 years, 40% barrique for 12 months and 60% stainless steel. Perfumed and floral on the nose, exotic while retaining freshness, with satsuma, fleshy white fruits, a touch of apricot stone fruit, good balance of granite and schist minerality, cloaked with great acidity which holds the Asian/ginger spice in check, long pure, attractive and very elegant, exemplary Condrieu. Drinking range: 2019 - 2022L&S (Jan 2019)

Brilliant, green-hued straw. Penetrating aromas of fresh citrus and pit fruits are complemented by hints of chalky minerals, violet and ginger. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering juicy nectarine and Meyer lemon flavors that show fine definition and mineral drive. The floral note comes back strong on the persistent finish, which leaves a hint of candied orange zest behind. Drinking range: 2020 - 2024 Rating: 92 Josh Raynolds, www.vinousmedia.com (May 2020)

Pale yellow. A nice toasty edge to start is then followed by a mineral slaty note and subtle apricot. Some weightiness on the mid palate but it is quite an elegant style of Condrieu. A clean and precise, focused wine, not overtly oily as some Condrieu can be. Drinking range: 2019 - 2025 Rating: 16.5 Alistair Cooper MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2019)

An enchanting Condrieu, this Rhône viognier has a broad, heady perfume like honeysuckle, apricots, galangal and nectarines and dances beautifully in the mouth. Most of the blend is aged in stainless steel, allowing the purity of the grape to gleam through, with some oak and concrete egg ageing to add layers of texture. I think Condrieu is best drunk young so dig in to this now.Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Dec 2019)

Aged 11 months, 60% in stainless steel, 30% in oak, 10% in concrete eggs. Apricot, peach, relatively light and creamy with an orange-skin character. Juicy, lengthy, plenty of fruit concentration. Drinking range: 2019 - 2025 Rating: 17 Richard Hemming MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Sept 2019)

This is one of the original domaines of the Condrieu appellation, and perhaps without the dedication to Viognier from Niero (and the likes of Vernay), Condrieu would not have the world-class reputation it has today.

The domaine existed 45 years ago when the whole appellation was just 8 hectares of vines (it's now 200 hectares), under the name Pinchon. Rémi's father Robert married the Pinchon daughter, so now, having been Domaine Niero-Pinchon for a bit, it has been shortened to simply Niero when Rémi took over.

The smart and charming Rémi started to work alongside his father in 2004 and today oversees the domaine along with his wife Krystel. They are the 3rd generation of winemakers and continue the tradition of the estate's refined and pure wines from Viognier and Syrah working from their cellars in Condrieu. The domaine has recently fully converted to organic farming. The wines, much like the estate, are pristine and pure.

The Condrieus come from just over 4 hectares of vines, all in the commune of Condrieu itself, in the parcels Coteau de Chéry, La Roncharde, Côte Chatillon, La Caille, Vergelas and Corbéry. All of these are considered some of the of the best sites in the world for Viognier. The wines are aged in tank (60%) and barrel (40%) for a year.

The Côte-Rôties come from two sites, La Viallière and Le Coteau de Bassenon, from the southern end of the appellation, a total of nearly 2 hectares. They are aged for 16 months in barrel, with 20% new wood. Along with the exceptional Saint Joseph there is also a new Crozes Hermitage in the range.
