CORTON CHARLEMAGNE

2018 Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

Wow. So loaded with firm, yellow-fleshed fruit and some pithy warm lemon squeeze. Monster attack of deep indulgence - what is clever though is the lively feel. Super energy and more chalky brightness keeps this rattling across the palate. The fruit builds to an imposing, intense and utterly delicious wallop. That energy and zip motors on and on though so this is not tiring or too big - but lingers well after you swallow.L&S (Nov 2019)

The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has much more delineation and complexity than the 2018 Champ-Gain, and I might actually prefer the aromatics here to the 2019. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and crisp, displaying fine salinity on the finish and a hint of brioche and white chocolate on the aftertaste. Enjoy over the next decade. Drinking range: 2021 - 2031 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

A ripe if restrained nose consists of citrus peel, green apple, floral and spice scents, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to mention. There is a bit more volume to the rich, powerful and nicely delineated flavors that are less refined but more mineral-driven and particularly so on the impressively long finish where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. Drinking range: 2028 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2020)

Bursting from the glass with aromas of citrus oil, fresh pear, dried flowers, toasted nuts and fresh pastry, Faiveley's 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, lively and incisive, with good concentration and chalky structuring extract, concluding with a long, precise and mineral finish. Rating: 93-95 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)

The Faiveley holdings add up to 0.87ha on a mix of soil types and altitudes, all quite cool. This marries richness, weighty and honeyed complexity with vibrant, mineral-edged acidity and scented oak. A textbook example from a year that didn't lend itself to classic wines. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 96 Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Dec 2019)

Barrel sample. After the Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot, this smells more subtle, more stony, though there’s still some attractive oak spice and a slight stoniness. Surprisingly rounded on the palate and could do with a little more intensity in the middle. Long but slightly disappointing. Drinking range: 2023 - 2028 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2019)

Le Corton. East facing. This is showing much better. Ripe but not overly rich with good depth and wet stone minerality. Long finish. It will age well. Rating: 96 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Nov 2019)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.

While helpful, we do not require a firm commitment on delivery destination to process your primeur order at this stage. Our team will be in contact with you when your wines arrive in the UK to confirm the necessary delivery details.
