Lovely, brambling red berries and some darker lines too. This is quite full on, gorgeously aromatic - but with some dark grip too. Rich but not sweet, this is always there aim - and is what they can achieve in this very particularly spot - Matera. 40-50% goes into large old Tonneaux - the rest into stainless steel, preserving freshness and that red fruit that adds satisfying lift. Deep crimson. Ripe-fruited and chewy. Simple but balanced. (JH) 14% Drinking range: 2023 - 2026 Rating: 15.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2023)

From the Basilicata region at the heel end of Italy, where the land has been cultivated by the same family for more than five centuries, comes a rich red made from the local primitivo grape. Made with minimal intervention, it’s claimed to be the modern version of a wine that in ancient times could only be drunk by the Greek god Dionysus. Nowadays, a slightly wider clientele will be able to enjoy this aromatic and intense red with its layered red berry flavour and piquant hints of spice.John Clarke - The Independent (Mar 2023)

Battifarano

If Italy is a boot, you'll find this brilliant winery on the coast in the arch of the foot, in the southern part of Basilicata. The Battifarano farm has been owned and worked by the same family for more than five centuries.

The focus moved to wine in the 1930s and Francesco, who currently heads up the family business, is the second generation to be a trained agronomist.

This has lead to a great focus on identifying the perfect sites for each of the different varieties grown here. The aim is, to as transparently as possible, transfer their great terroir into the wine in every bottle.

Minimal interventions are made and the results speak for themselves. These are the very purest expressions of the local Basilicata varieties Primitivo and Greco, dishing up excellent value, top quality wines that are simply a pleasure to drink.
